If people want a sales chart, they have one they can use instead; the consumption model makes more sense in the current industry and with the direction the industry is taking.

It almost has closed the gap on iTunes, is still widening the gap on streaming and this happened on radio today

Yeah, I do, because the literal intent of the chart is to measure consumption of the album and the individual pieces of that album.

The BB200 is just not a sales chart anymore, and expecting sales to completely dictate positions is equivalent to sticking with old methods and ideas.

We're rapidly approaching a market in which the vast majority of revenue comes from streaming, and the ways in which we measure success and in which we view music consumption need to change in order to keep up with the pace of industry change.

Commercially, that actually could make a bit of sense in the future - there's no conceptual necessity to package several individual products (the songs) as an album if that stops being a sales incentive.

However, I disagree in that I feel like albums serve purposes less obvious than direct commercial ones. They allow an artist to provide a more expansive cohesive platform with which to market themselves than one or a few singles, they better enable tours to be distinct from each other, and they feed into the established fan culture.

They should be kept as a formality and for those reasons, but they won't sell forever and they need not be required if an artist is more interested in a steady and consistent pattern of singles releases.

Streaming is the future. Streaming is way more telling of what people like than radio. And with digital sales coming to an end how else can we measure a songs popularity? Anyone that wants to cut streaming out is just upset because there faves are more airplay fueled than streaming.

It'll be fascinating to see how the public's perception of albums changes as time goes on. I don't necessarily think they'll be rendered irrelevant; album sales will continue their steady decline, but I feel that there will be a very sizeable market for them for the foreseeable future.

Albums with massive hit singles like Uptown Special are naturally going to continue to benefit on the charts.

Now this makes sense. Basically IMO the album sale should only count in equivalence to each track being streamed meaning that say there's ten tracks on the album, every time each track has 100 plays which will equal up to that 1000 then it should count as one album sale or something like that.

I don't know if a sale of an album currently equals 100 streams anyway in the US, though, so I don't particularly see the point there.

Actually, because I was unsure, I looked it up:

The updated Billboard 200 will utilize accepted industry benchmarks for digital and streaming data, equating 10 digital track sales from an album to one equivalent album sale, and 1,500 song streams from an album to one equivalent album sale.

As far as limiting it to 12 tracks and downweighting the top 2, I don't think that makes much sense, because it doesn't offer a legitimately comprehensive picture of the album's overall success or consumption.

I'd rather stick with the US model.

Right now Nielsen/BB SEA depends on number of tracks on album - it's completely nonsense...

2. 2 most streamed songs are down-weighted to stop hits boostings albums.

OCC calculates average of album song streams ( number of streams of 12 most popular album's songs / 12) and then down number of 2 most streamed songs to this average:



Then they use formula: new total album streaming / 1,000 = 1 copy of album
