I'm not familiar with Three Oh Sees or Deafheaven but I'm liking what I hear based on the videos so far. I'll check them out later in detail.

Alabama, Tame, it's all good My roommate listens to Deafheaven nn and it's a bit ..much, but I've heard some of their mess in isolation and gotten myself to like it so I think they might be on the list to check out after Baroness, I definitely understand the appeal of wanting your music to kick your ass

Deafhaven is just NOT for me. I tried to give that one song a chance from the Pitchfork rate, I listened to a touch of their new album earlier in the year... I can't do it.

I remember seeing Catfish on prezli's (or someone's) year-end a lot so I should check them out. I was really digging that first song you posted. Algiers in particular also seems interesting. Gotta check it out too!

Its a solid album, ill give the edge to Ghost Stories, AHFOD needed like 2 more solid songs to really overtake it...

I listen to a decent amount of metal but usually not enough for it to chart I think I have two more metal albums coming.

Thee Oh Sees are a great band. If you liked the song posted, you'd probably like them as a whole, especially if you're into more garage rock type music.

I always got time for Algiers. THey have such an interesting sound.

I kind of liked this Deafheaven album more over Sunbather, but I might be in the minority there. I hear you on them maybe being a little much. You almost gotta train yourself for metal. It's pretty nice when it hits you the right way though. Oh, and Baroness will pop up later, they've been one of my favorite bands or a bit.

Deafheaven is a little loud and out there I hear you there. For what it's worth, I liked this album much more than Sunbather. I didn't play in the Pitchfork Rate, I think it was before my time here But, metal is a completely different thing to get into, like I said, it almost requires easing into. I'd probably start with Baroness, who will show up eventually, or Mastodon (been a stan since 2006 or so) if you wanted to start getting into metal.

Yup. You probably saw the Catfishers on prezli's countdown, she got me into them and they were pretty worth it. Good poppy band. Algiers have a pretty unique sound.

High By The Beach is the best song on Honeymoon. Of course it would be her highest, pun completely intended, song. What would you have put there? The Boringest Day? Charles Manson Loves You? Music To Die Of Boredom To?

Thanks for checking this out legend! I liked the Coldplay album a lot, it hit the right spots for me since Mylo Xyloto is one of my favorites by them, but it's pretty divisive.

Thanks Clarkson! My taste is kind of a mess though. It pretty much keeps me from ever listening to shuffle.

I loved the Demi album, she delivered something pretty great (at times).

Glad you liked Catfish! They have some pretty great hooks. I'm not huge on current alternative music, but they put out a solid album.

At least you like Deafheaven. The album impressed me a lot. I love it. It's one of my winter albums.

If you didn't like their first single you might not like the whole album. I'd suggest Everglow and Amazing Day though, they're more Classic Coldplay.

I feel so ashamed for letting prezli down. I hope she doesn't get too angry, I know she loves them so much. At least they were number one on her countdown.

I think I prefer this album. Ghost Stories just didn't quite do it much for me. It had some great moments though. I also saw that you hated Hymn, and

26: Coldplay - Hymn For The Weekend


"I-Oh-I-Oh / Got me feeling drunk and high / So high, so high"goes the chorus of Hymn For The Weekendthe ridiculous banger off Coldplay's (who would have thought this would be a sentence?) A Head Full Of Dreams. Musically speaking, the album is a monster. There's the beautiful endlessly cascading piano line and bird call that starts out the song, but it doesn't stay in one gear for long as it lurches along, it constantly shifts and adds new instruments and sounds, it's catchy as can be and has an heavenly rhythm. Amen.

25: Drake - 10 Bands


This was my most played off Drake's mixtape. "10 Bands, 50 bands, 100 bands, **** it, man. Let's just not even discuss it man" This is the song that best fits the "haunted house turn-up music" descriptor that the mixtape got labeled with. That ghostly beat, light and vaguely menacing keeps things moving and suggests that Drake or Quentin might have spent some time with Clipping.'s album. It's a Fun fact: Drake referenced bands on Lil Wayne's Believe Me, one of the bands he referenced: Coldplay ^.

24: Nothing But Thieves - Lover, Please Stay


This is the Thieves's highest placing song here. Deserving so, Lover, Please Stay is equally gorgeous and heartbreaking, feeling like a mix of Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah and any number of Radiohead's gloomy ballads. " I don't want to be alone, if I am tonight, I always will be. Take from me, whatever you want, whatever you need". It's a direct plea to a lover that is gone, the last feeble defeated attempt at holding on to something that will never be. Warning: Conor Mason's E-MO-TIONAL ghostly vocals hit hard.

23: EXO - My Answer

My one K-Pop entry here. K-Pop can be a little loud and over stimulating for me, but I loved this one to no end. It's another ballad, and a showstopper at that. The piano is as crisp as freshly fallen autumn leaves and the vocals are silky smooth; the song feels timeless, it could easily be a lost standard . It's (mostly) not in English, the only line in English being: "My Answer is you," but it's captivating and directly emotional in a way that most ballads just aren't..

22: Leon Bridges - Brown Skinned Girl

I was lucky enough to catch Leon Bridges earlier this year, and the guys puts on a great live show. You almost feel like you're transported back to the days of white walled Cadillacs and jukeboxes. Coming Home, while not quite capturing the magic of his live show, is still a pretty solid album and Brown Skin Girl does the best job at capturing that polished swing that that era seems to have. There's some wide eyed pupy dog innocence, Leon expresses his admiration in a "Princess, little honey with the polka dot dress on / Ruby-lipped lady whose name I don't know." The song might as well have come out of a time capsule, but it feels crisp and fresh. .

21: MNDR (feat. Killer Mike) - Lock & Load

"Boys and girls in the front get your guns out
Got heart, got style, got a lot of mouth," the opening lines to Lock & Load might as well be their mission statement. The song is effortlessly cool, but also one of the tensest that I heard this year. The song appears on a soundtrack inspired by the fictional and crime ridden Los Santos, a representation of Los Angeles, from the Grand Theft Auto Games, and not only represents the franchise well, it also captures LA's edge very well. As I said, the song continuously builds tension. MNDR's repeated verses of "lock & load fire" over some heated hazy synths put you on edge, until Killer Mike comes in and delivers a fiery verse worthy of a Run The Jewels album.


Funnily enough, I found this song because I'm a MNDR fan, I occasionally check to see if they released anything new, and to my surprise, they released this, and featured Killer Mike, one of the most criminally underrated rappers, and one of my favorite artists. it was a perfect match. [/opacity].
