Y'all are really something else.

I never asked for your opinion though.

"Do YOU know that the air in China is that polluted that people there should wear masks in order to not get ill? You should be ashamed of your privilege of breathing fresh air? How do you live with yourself? Privileged scum."

I didn't ask for a South Asian opinion...
I am not pretentious or bothered and even specifically stated to calmly start a convo with me if you feel something is off, just don't be upset if I have counter arguments.
I am not angry either. I'm trying to be calm when I tell you that I am resonating with the cancer patients, trying to get people to not divert attention away from the beautiful cause by putting in unnecessary remarks. I was just upset by that part. Not because I thought henna was something that shouldn't be a big deal. (Although, I did a quick little research on it and found that many cultures across the desert have adopted this.)

We all know what an atlas looks like and we all know (unless you're religiously educated otherwise) that we all came from Africa... India... yeah, that's to the right of the world. How did henna body art become an Asian tradition, and its people in this thread are claiming ownership, when y'all started it thousands of years ago? It's your culture, come claim it!

Plus, aren't there South Asians who are actually selling the henna paint on eBay, Amazon, etc. to westerners?

'SJWs' and ATRLers do the exact same thing
Y'all both think you can decide what's offensive and what's not. At least SJWs are more educated and know cultural appropriation is not a tumblr made up term though!

I agree with you in the sense that IMO, offensiveness is an individual thing. It's up to each individual person if they are offended by something. There's some major things like slurs that offend the overwhelming majority of ethnic individuals. Then there's somethings like cultural appropriation, which, some ethnic people are very passionate about, and some couldn't care less.

A recent thread showed that there's a higher percentage of white people on ATRL. That doesn't say much, but in juxtaposition with how frequent anti-SJW threads are, it really shows privilege in action, and how coddled y'all have been to the point where anything that attacks your internalised racism and insensitivity is a joke. And most of y'all are gay, you should understand the frustrations around having your entire community exploited - yet you don't. It's a cyclical tragedy.

Whether or not it's made up by Tumblr users doesn't add any validity to their claims.
Cultural Appropriation is complete nonsense and problematic in so many ways.
You have to be blind not to see it.

Some researches argue henna originated in ancient India while others claim it was brought to India by Egyptian moghuls in the 12th century C.E. Still others will contend that the tradition of applying henna to the body began in the Middle East and North Africa in ancient times.

Fascinating.

Archaeological research indicates henna was used in ancient Egypt to stain the fingers and toes of Pharaohs prior to mummification. But research also argues the Pharaohs were not the only Egyptians to use henna. Ancient Egyptians and many indigenous and aboriginal people around the world believed that the naturally derived red substances of ochre, blood and henna had qualities that improved human awareness of the earth’s energies. It was therefore applied to help people keep in touch with their spirituality.

I didn't know that Henna had so much history to it! Are there any Egyptians here?

I'm not a white person though, but I can understand where you're coming from. Correlation does not equal causation though. So no, it's not just "privileged whites" making these threads.
I simply said that it was awful how people weren't focusing on the point of the original post. I didn't really say anything about the South Asian part of it.
As I stated before, not everything that disagrees with me is a joke. I'm willing to sit here and listen if you have anything to talk about, whether it be discussing things that I've said that you find offensive, or things that other people have said that have made you feel the same way.
Some SJW's, though they mean well, go too far a lot of the times and end up making fools out of themselves. It's great that we have people who want to fight against sexism, racism, and all of the other -isms. But we need to do it in a calm and thought out manner, and not just yell back and forth, jumping to conclusions, insulting, and accusing.

I have my own cultural and I don't personally claim anything as being only exclusive to the people in my culture. Just because some traditions/foods/wardrobe/etc are more practiced by people in my culture does not give me the right to take ownership of it. Just the thought of it is absurd.

Report it to the authorities!
In all seriousness, I highly doubt this woman in the OP had her head painted like this without first knowing what it all means. Plus, it's for a good cause and a good reason. I personally would be proud, not offended. She's not dressed up as Ganapati!

Henna is a product, not a part of culture.

I personally agree with some of this. This was all for a good cause, so I wasn't sure why some were so upset.
