You can also try catching Thundurus and teach him Fly, but you'll probably be screwed cuz you need Fly during the main game

I'm loki in the same boat because I want to get the new XL, but all I play are Pokémon games, so, I'm debating.

No. Pokemon games don't benefit from the hardware upgrade and the extra stick doesn't add anything to the game either.
Unless you plan to play Xenoblade, Super Smash Bros or Monster Hunter it's not really necessary.
I've never done more than one run with the same team except for once: my current SoulSilver run is just me and my Typhlosion, which is the same team I used in my first-ever play through of the original Silver (my first game) waaaaay back in 2001. Bitch got to Lv. 91 without rare candies by the time I reset, it was tough. I miss ha.
Other than that, I don't reuse all too much, even starters.
I played White when it came out in japan and used the exact team later in the german version too
And my Alpha Sapphire team is pretty much the team i used in my last emerald playthrough except that i used Salamence instead of Skamory.
Come to think of it, the only starters I've used (as in actually included on a team) more than once are the Johto trio, Charmander, Blaziken, and Treecko.
