Now can you please remove my name from your rant about how this was the treat I was trying to make. It wasn't at all. This is the thread you wanted to make in retaliation to my legitimate thread topic. I was trying to point out that these ads don't actually help the situation and the HIV stigma. You got overheated.

They don't fear STDs and think and the only worst outcome is pregnancy
it's ridiculous and its a shame my dumb ass brother thinks that way too.
OT I think most black men are uncircumcised so that may run risks.

Not when Africa is the most circumcised continent in the world with an 80%+ prevalence of circumcision and African-American men are also the most likely to be circumcised in North America.

The downlow lifestyle. There is a huge stigma about being gay in the black community. So they get men on the side and lie to the women. The women get it and give it to straight men. Sorry I'm not being more eloquent but I'm on my iPad and typing is a bitch.
A lot of the black scene queens I know are into heavy drug use. Coke, meth and crack. They know about condoms but they're depressed and they don't care about their health because they don't see any reason to live. Their family has all but washed their hands of them or they treat them like ****. So it's that double minority that really affects them. I've spoken to a couple of them in depth about sex and life and both of them said they don't like using condoms either as the top or the bottom. But I think for the community as a whole, safe sex isn't really a priority.

The bottom line is I've been very involved on this issue and topic at more than just posting a concern on a message board. I've actually donated my work, money and free time to this cause anonymously on multiple occasions. I don't have a problem with you. I just have a problem with the fact that you closed my topic and started another one to single out a single racial group on this issue which further adds stigma to those living with HIV. I was trying to address the stigma of HIV while this thread title and topic from is conception was a deliberate reinforcement of the stigma associated with HIV. That is the point and I'll leave it at that.

"DL" black men being the cause of the spread of HIV amongst black gays is such a nonsensical and weird ass myth. That **** doesn't even add up

Nah, people are discussing an actual statistic, not a stereotype.
(It could've easily gone left but so far it hasn't, and everyone's being objective w/their opinions which is good)

According to CDC:
http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/group/raciale...icanamericans/
Quote:
African Americans face a number of challenges that contribute to the higher rates of HIV infection. The greater number of people living with HIV (prevalence) in African American communities and the fact that African Americans tend to have sex with partners of the same race/ethnicity means that they face a greater risk of HIV infection with each new sexual encounter.
African American communities continue to experience higher rates of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) compared with other racial/ethnic communities in the United States. Having an STI can significantly increase the chance of getting or transmitting HIV.
Lack of awareness of HIV status can affect HIV rates in communities. Almost 73,600 HIV-infected people in the African American community in 2011 were unaware of their HIV status. Diagnosis late in the course of HIV infection is common, which results in missed opportunities to get early medical care and prevent transmission to others.
The poverty rate is higher among African Americans than other racial/ethnic groups. The socioeconomic issues associated with poverty—including limited access to high-quality health care, housing, and HIV prevention education—directly and indirectly increase the risk for HIV infection, and affect the health of people living with and at risk for HIV. These factors may explain why African Americans have worse outcomes on the HIV continuum of care, including lower rates of linkage to care, retention in care, being prescribed HIV treatment, and viral suppression. New data from 2010 indicate that 75% of HIV-infected African Americans aged 13 or older are linked to care, 48% are retained in care, 46% are prescribed antiretroviral therapy, and only 35% are virally suppressed.
Stigma, fear, discrimination, homophobia, and negative perceptions about HIV testing can also place too many African Americans at higher risk. Many at risk for HIV fear discrimination and rejection more than infection and may choose not to seek testing.

You can't ignore that drug use is a main risk factor in any group dealing with HIV. Whether from sharing needles or a drug induced lax attitude towards sex and protection, it's a problem.
But if we left out drug as a cause for a higher than average HIV infection rate, you'd be left with unsafe sex. The question is then why aren't young black men using condoms despite a multitude of ways to get free condoms/birth control in urban areas? Are they not aware of the dangers or do they not care? Speaking from personal experience, every gay man I've met has known about HIV. So the most likely reasoning behind it is that they don't care.
Now, not to be offensive, but the harsh reality is that a lot of black people are living in urban areas with high crime, poor schools and a homophobic environment. I can only guess that these men aren't using protection because they're ashamed of being gay and scared shitless of their friends and family finding out. The only people that can answer this are the young black men who have sex with men. Then you'd have to find the common answer of why.
Back to schools, I know that any school with a health class advocates condom use second to abstinence. So they're obviously not being abstinate or using condoms or else the rate wouldn't be so high. I can only assume that it's a societal problem. That there isn't much effort put into safe sex in the msm black community and the urban black community at large. That statement is backed up by the fact that young black women are twice as likely as white teens to be pregnant before leaving adolescence.

Anyway I'm gonna have to put it down to education. Sex education in white schools is ****** enough, imagine how bad sex education would be in predominantly black school which already has subpar education. Just a theory

They didn't even offer sex ed at my high school

It's not only a problem in developed countries like US.
It's all about sex education, that kind of topics are poorly handled in every single school from every single country. Teenagers and people from 21 to 25 are among the new cases the Health Ministry receives in my country every month. Earlier this month, a guy from a foundation I used to work with since I was dating someone HIV+ told me they got more than 400 new cases in the past month in my state in order to start giving them free treatment. Thank God the government gives the treatment for free to those who live with the virus.
We need to start improving sexual education in our schools, talk to the teenage community about the risks and we also have to teach them how to be humble and good to those who have HIV, so they won't stigmatized it or be afraid to engage in a friendship or relationship with a person HIV+.
I met a doctor a couple of months ago, he's a psychiatrist. He wanted to start a support group in my city to people who live with the virus, my ex boyfriend wanted to cooperate but he told me the main problem was most people live scared to tell anyone they had it because they've been discriminated by ignorant people. That also happens to those who have never gotten tested, they don't do it because they fear they could test positive and if they have the virus and are sexually active, they would be spreading it to anyone who's with them. Then again, it all comes down to sexual education and information about the virus.
Most people also think that if they're HIV+, they will die in a matter of weeks or months.

Haven't HIV rates among young gay black men leveled off though? And hasn't it been increasing among white gays?

I dont think poverty has anything to do with this.. Just a few weeks ago i saw el Paso tx ranked as the most safe city and was the lowest in income in comparision to other cities that had higher income brackets.. i dont buy this whole poverty thing anymore. I dont think it is the sole reason to blame hiv on. if anything its a minute factor but i dont think we can blame being poor on high sti/hiv infections.

Down Low means they're not out the closet pretending to be straight but have sex with men.

Lack of STD education, I would say. Also, I think casual sex is a contributing factor, especially amongst people on the "DL".
