Didn't realize MDNR had a song out this year. Your description of it is really accurate, but I don't seem to love the song or anything. The Bonnie song is good too and I've finally listened to the EP. I was kinda drawn away after that American something song.

Andrew Combs and Punch Brothers both sound nice! I especially liked the Punch Brothers song. And Uptown Funk aw yeah You're so right at it being such an extroverted song. I think the fact that everyone likes it so much actually made everyone a little more outgoing.

The fact that they did a cat themed remix album I love them so much. It was one of those things I didn't know I wanted until I had it.

The whole Viet Cong album was amazing. Love the Uptown Funk! Love. It still hasn't gotten old.

81: Kendrick Lamar - For Free? (Interlude)



One listen to To Pimp A Butterfly and you'll know this one, "This dick ain't free" Kendrick's dick immediately stands out on the album. It's a punky 2 minutes, in which Kendrick covers a lot of territory on this, (well he does on the whole of the album, but this one whizzes by hitting you hard and fast with commentary on being pimped out by the industry and America, but also some commentary on relationship dynamics, all while riding a frantic jazzy beat. Metaphors upon metaphors here.

80: Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment - Slip Slide




I'm terrible at keeping up with musicians. Usually I find an album I like, check it and spend time with it. I almost never keep up with single releases, videos and all that. Sometimes I'll check singles, most of the time I don't, and have no idea what the singles released off albums beyond the lead are. I downloaded Surf and this was always the stand-out on the album (which is hard, because the album would be a highlight of any year). I guess it's fitting that this one falls here, right after Kendrick's For Free? since it's all about standing on your own two, in the music industry or otherwise. I love that marching rhythm, that gives you a beat for you to march to. Plus, the song's hook is the year's most fun.

79: Drake - Hotline Bling


Drake's first appearance of many here. I have mixed feeling about this one. I love it, i's endlessly listenable, but still adventurous (that beat dissolving at "bending over backwards" is a trademark Drake touch). I also love how it fits in here in this update because Drake has more creative freedom than just about anybody at the moment, mostly due to his willing to play the game on his own terms (he's one of the most sonically progressive rappers out there, always looking for new source material and remixing more indie artists to give them exposure). He threw this one together, released it out of the blue and watched it gain a life of his own, only really coming back to it to try and give it that final nudge when it had already became a full-fledged hit (who else has that power?). But the songs populist appeal is why it's so low, the song took on a life of it's own, and well, hearing everybody and their mom cover it killed it a little for me. Case in point, there's this remix that plays on my radio station that takes Kehlani and Charlie Puth's cover and mixes it in half-way through the song. I don't want to hear them, they remove some of the songs spark and replace Drake's heartache with puppy dog cuteness. I'd hang up on them if they ever called me on my cell in all honesty, or change my number, but Drake has figured out a way to get people to really listen when he was something to say and even reply back. I love that, even if the replies get a little too noisy.

78: Janet Jackson - The Great Forever


Funny and true story: the night Unbreakable dropped, I was listening to the album while cooking dinner. At one point, I was grinding pepper into the thing I was cooking, it caught an updraft from the high heat and got in my face. I couldn't stop sneezing. After I was wiping the tears from my eyes and recovering, I hear a strange "bless you." I thought I was imagining things because of my sneezing fit, but it really did seem like a "bless you!" I was in fact listening to this song when that happened, and my sneezes overlapped with the recorded one. I started listening again right at the "bless you." Only on the next listen did I find out I was not hearing things. It was a strange moment, but the one in which I became a stan. This song anyway would have found it's way in regardless, it's trademark Jackson (Michael or Janet) with a soaring chorus only they are capable of. I also like the song's message about being yourself and having that guide your path in life, and I don't know if it was conscious, but it's cool that a song about the great forever feels like an homage to Michael.

77: David Bowie - Blackstar



I have Apple Music (I'm a Drake stan), and was listening to some of the newer songs in the background (not very intently admittedly). A song caught my ear, it was so interestingly weird. I loved how it sounded, I thought it might be some cool new artist with some edgy single and had to immediately check who it was so I could stan, but I was wrong! It was a song Bowie had happened to drop that day. I've loved the song since. It's not the flashiest, but it does take you on an interstellar journey.

76: Missy Elliott (feat. Pharrell) - WTF (Where They From)



Let's be real. Missy could do better. At the same time though, there's not many that could make a song as cool and fun as this one so Missy's met with a double-edged sword. Ironically, this year some of her classics re-entered the Hot 100 thanks to the Super Bowl, so WTF suffers in comparison. What does help this song is that Missy sounds happy to be back and energized, which is the most promising thing. Hopefully 2016 is her year.
