Welcome to Platinum Hit Season 8!
Congratulations, Top 10! You made it. We all made it. It's time to begin the final third of the competition. Are you ready?
CHALLENGE #9
THE WRITING CAMP CHALLENGE
With the amount of recycling I'm doing this season, you'd think I was an environmentalist. This was one of the most well-received challenges of last season and I think it added a really unique, real-world application to the game that everyone found refreshing and enjoyable.
In this challenge, us five judges have created a brand new record label with an artist that we've signed who is looking for songs for their new album! Take a minute to read through the following options. (A big thank you to all of the judges for getting these back to me so quickly!)
Kiddone Records
CEO: Sam
Artist: Tara Lyrke
Genres: Electropop, Synthpop, R&B, Trap
Quote:
Tara Lyrke is the latest addition to the Kiddone Records roster. After winning a Swedish singing competition at the young age of 14, Tara finished her studies, but always knew that the music industry is where she belonged. Now 19, Tara has relocated from Sweden to Los Angeles, where she lives with her manager and boyfriend.
Marketed as Sweden’s answer to a combination of Britney Spears and Beyoncé, Tara is a fantastic singer, performer, dancer and actress, and is very involved in her music and knows exactly what she wants. The only thing is, she doesn’t write her own songs! That’s where you come in, to help unlock Tara’s ideas and turn them into a perfect song for her to sing.
Contrary to the Britney/Beyoncé mix her label has in mind, Tara still has a strong authentic connection to Swedish music, and loves electropop and synthpop styles with darker undertones and messages of female empowerment. Some of her favourite Swedish artists include Tove Styrke, Zara Larsson, Tove Lo, Elliphant and ABBA. However, Tara also knows that versatility is important and she’d like to try to meet her label’s requests too and have some sexually suggestive jams with lots of innuendos. Some of her favourite US artists include Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Ciara and Tinashe.

Railroad Records
CEO: GotSkill
Artist: Forrest Bird
Genres: Indie Rock, Folk, Acoustic
Quote:
Forrest Bird recently left his indie rock group The Mountain Men and is looking to make a big splash as a solo artist. Contrary to his musical background, he's looking for a more organic, folky, acoustic sound with his solo debut. He loves hiking and travelling, and as such would like natural imagery and a sense of mysticism in his songs. Forrest is hoping more to make it to 2016's year end lists than have a #1 hit, so feel free to experiment with structure and poetic techniques. Cliches are his pet peeve.
Forrest has recently been inspired by the likes of Jack Johnson, Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers, and Lord Huron. His favorite albums are Paradise Valley by John Mayer and Carrie & Lowell by Sufjan Stevens.

Electric City Records
CEO: Hugamari
Artist: Jessika
Genres: Dance, Electronic, Rap, R&B, Pop
Quote:
Hello everybody, my name is Jessika, and I'm looking to debut in the US with a fun, upbeat song that would keep my Eastern fan base happy while winning over a new Western audience. After being dropped from my old group "Girls' Decade" by my old management MS Entertainment, I decided to move on to bigger things and a bigger sound.
I want to have upbeat dance/electronic songs songs that are very catchy with tight rhythms/meter, have fun, quirky wordplay, and potentially have a rap bridge (a playful one, though! I'm not the HBIC yet!) An upbeat R&B/Pop crossover type of song about relationships (in or out of them!) would not be out of my element, either! I don't want the songs to be too serious, though - I'm looking for a fun debut!
I have influences in a lot of places! Some of my many influences include: Meghan Trainor, Kesha, Rihanna, Tinashe, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, 4Minute/HyunA, Hello Venus, and 2NE1! Saranghae! ♥

Velveteen Cat Records
CEO: lovesong
Artist: Yumi Mino
Genres: Electronic, Pop, Post-punk, Indie-rock, Trip hop
Quote:
Yumi Mino is a solo artist from Seattle, Washington. Originally, she was a part of a college band that consisted of three other members, wherein she was the lead vocalist. That band experimented with a post-punk style and occasionally added electronic and trip hop influences into their music. Unfortunately, as bands often do, they broke up. Yumi decided to relocate to Brooklyn with a friend where she could learn more about the independent music scene and develop her own style.
Currently, she is in love with fusing psychedelic electronic beats with pop melodies. Although success would be great, Yumi is still working on her first solo album having only uploaded a few rough demos onto Soundcloud and Youtube in the past. She's starting to get a bit of hype and certain publications are starting to talk about when her debut will be released, and are starting to compare her to current acts like Grimes and FKA twigs. She needs to WOW them, but also ensure that she creates music she individually can connect to.
Her inspirations include a variety of acts in and out of the electronic genre such as Portishead, Grimes, and Massive Attack. And she is particularly taken by pop music in the late '90s such as Janet's The Velvet Rope, Mariah's Butterfly, Madonna's Ray of Light, and Kylie MInogue's Impossible Princess. Yumi is considering these albums as inspirations, but is also unsure if she should include elements of her indie-rock/trip hop past.

Meowsetopic Records
CEO: Meowster
Artist: Terra
Genres: Jazz, Folk, Dream-pop
Quote:
After years of lurking in candlelit clubs and small jazz tours, Terra was finally picked up by Meowsetopic Records following an acclaimed mixtape put their name on the map. Terra is a duo of a man and a woman, Luc Wehnes and Effie Benoit, bass and alto respectively, that try to make unique blendings with their voices through tone and have a knack for keeping their instrumentation and production simple. They've been together for over a year now and, while they have found minute success within Russia and some smaller countries in Europe, just can't seem to take off. With their first recording contract, they've agreed to relinquish their artistic license in favor of songwriting camps to help come up with a marketable sound. They are not looking for initial gateway success but rather a lead to strong fanbase.
The duo come from Kansas City - they're known for their work with jazz bars and small venues. What we are looking for is a way to highlight the duo as separate and whole, each having their own distinctive flair, while still having enough common ground to be seen in unison. We want to take elements from folk, maybe combine it with hinted layers of dream-pop, and give them a real edge that also provides authenticity and genuine showmanship. They particularly want lyrics that deal with duality. Links between human relationships/love and the natural/supernatural world. Metaphor driven.

BUT! (yes, there is a but)
This challenge is not exactly the same as last season. As with most of the reused challenges, there is going to be a new twist to spice things up for Season 8. We want this to be like a real writing camp experience. What does that mean for you? It means that this challenge also doubles as the collaboration challenge.
You must pick another contestant to work with this challenge, and both agree to work together. Once your duo is confirmed in the thread, you can select which label you would like to work with. I'm sure you've already done the math, 10 contestants paired up and 5 labels leaves one label per team. There will be no doubles, every label's writing camp MUST be filled. It's first in, first served. If you can find a partner and agree on a label, you'll get it.
Sign-ups
Kiddone Records: Achilles. & UFO
Railroad Records: ClarksonSlays & Moonchild
Electric City Records: 8thPrince & Vulnicura
Velveteen Cat Records: swiftie13 & ughgabriel
Meowsetopic Records: MattyTacos & TheCheetahwings
You will be judged on three criteria this week; the general criteria for how much we like the song, the criteria for how well we believe you followed the label's directions, and a third criteria for how well we think you worked together (if we can see a blend if your writing styles coming through).
The CEO of the label you sign-up for also has to choose whether or not they believe your song would be good enough to make their artist's album, and if they agree, there will be some bonus points up for grabs there too.
You will succeed together and you will fall together, so make it count.
