Everyone knew about Bey's album. If they wanted to get it, they would have. And she performed at the Grammy's and VMAs, which are the biggest promotional tools.

From my perspective, it's more about creating "moments" that get spread around and talked about outside of the talk shows. Like JLaw talking about her most embarassing moments has 5 mil views and Adele's Thanksgiving skit has permeated outside of SNL (10 million views).
The more you're on people's mind (in a non-offense and suggestive way), the more likely they are to invest in you when the time comes (i.e. your album is at the counter at the cash register).
