I'd say sleep, read a book/magazines, maybe put a movie on your phone. Wouldn't buy anything especially just for that one flight.

It's an 8 hour flight + 3-4 hour commute to the village where I'm staying. I don't think my phone will last that long if I play a movie on it as I'm taking an old iPhone 5 (not risking my iphone 6 getting damaged).

You could get a portable charger/powerbank? That should be able to top up your battery when it gets low. And if you manage to sleep for part of it, your battery should be able to pull through.

I saw one for £15 on amazon . I think I'll take a few books and the battery powerbank.
But then I need something to entertain me whilst there which is why the DVD player/tablet would be useful.
