I know security services can't pick everything up but this is SO co-ordinated and widespread how did they not intercept and have intelligence before it happened?
Having studied this stuff, it really does fall through the cracks quite easily.
IS knows what they're doing. They're smart - they aim for the most crowded areas, the biggest "hits to democracy and the west," etc. They're also experts in social media.
Just because there a few people twisting a religion for their own ideas does not mean that an entire religion and all religion is the cause of this. And yes, compared to the MILLIONS (1+ billion, actually) of Muslims out there, this is just a few.
