The debate in this thread was actually really interesting.
Some anime characters (including the guy from Death Note) for sure look Asian. There's no way around that. However, some anime characters, even in the same series, look white!! In the case where an anime is based in a fictional location, I understand how casting would be a struggle.
For example, if they were casting tales of Vesperia I could see them going with an Asian actor to play Yuri (left) and a Nordic actor to play Flynn (right). I could also see white actors playing both, or Asian actors playing both. It's really just a toss-up, and is open to interpretation. Sadly, open to interpretation also means open to discrimination which especially isn't fair because anime is an Asian created at form.
