The Sims 2 is so much better though

Despite the open world concept and slightly improved graphics, TS3 is really quite a lifeless base game. Such basic features that you'd expect in a life simulation game like sickness, memories and interests were completely disregarded for no apparent reason. TS2 base game also had visible retail stores, private schools, alien abductions, NPCs such as exterminators and gardeners not to mention the slew of objects that either returned in an expansion pack for TS3 or were excluded completely like pianos, magazines, hot tubs, wedding arches and diving boards.
The Sims themselves were much more intuitive and interactive. Even the minute details like sims getting annoyed when other sims flushed the toilet while they were showering or kids running outside to hug their parents when they returned from work really added to its charm.
Don't get me wrong, TS3 is a great game and I've had many hours of enjoyment from it, but if we boil it down to core gameplay, TS2 is leaps and bounds ahead of TS3.
