So Day One of my attempt at a Hard Candy/Colin Relationship Rehabilitation was today. 
Honestly, something Alan said was a real turning point. He said something to the effect of the album's lyrics being kind of bleak at times, reflecting Madonna's state of mind as she was experiencing some deep personal issues, etc. And all of a sudden there was this big sad cloud hanging over the album. The sparseness that I'd always found grating, the melodies I'd always found flat, the lyrical content I'd often found trite and ridiculous - my mind has recast all of these as sonic testaments to - respectively - the dissolution of her marriage, her resulting personal melancholy, and the need to escape it through her music. It doesn't mean I love the album automatically, but songs like Heartbeat and Incredible gained instant gravitas and are far more interesting to me now.
We'll see where this journey takes me....

I truly do think there's a lot more to be said about Hard Candy than ever is. Songs like "Dance 2night" and "Beat Goes On" have some kind of escapist feelings from them, like Madonna wrote them to actively avoid getting too personal, and therefore revealing an interesting thought about what might have driven her at that time. The amount of people she worked with, "I tried to find a friend, more easily said." etc.
"Heartbeat" is very much about her trying to find a connection.

I do think this might be reading more depth into the album than there actually is, but if that is what you need to do to enjoy it then fine (although you should figure out a way to enjoy debut first because that is what actual flawless music escapism through euphoria is...not trash like Heartbeat and Spanish Lesson). I hate on Hard Candy a lot, but some of it is okay and I don't think everything Madonna does needs to be genre redefining as much as I want it to be. Honestly I like it more than I let on, I just refuse to allow certain stans to paint it out to be her magnum opus just because they don't like older music. That being said I do wish she worked out her "musical escapism" with some better producers and less Timberlake.

I know very well it's not her magnum opus, but it's far better than the credit it gets, and that's more or less what I do - ensure it gets it's deserved acclaim.

Ring My Bell is about M dragging Guy.
Heartbeat is about M's escape of her flop life.

Poor Guy though. Sean got True Blue and Like A Prayer, and Guy got Hard Candy and MDNA .
