The biggest selling point of 80s Slasher movies was the GORE, especially the Friday The 13th franchise(which is the one they used as a template) so when they're trying to take that element away it just feels incomplete.

It scared me so much when I first saw it I LITERALLY would not watch TV for weeks
What are some of your fav horrors in general?
|
The Sheriff
I was scared to do anything. Especially open up closets. That poor girl in the beginning.
I literally love so many horror films. It's probably my favorite genre of film. Everything from Nosferatu to 28 Days Later. I especially love the Scream series. Sorry it took so long I'm watching The Walking Dead

I have always loved the gore! I recently watched The Green Inferno and found it to be tame. I had the theater to myself.

Watch it! One of the best horror films in years! It's quite retro so you may not like it. You'd be in the minority though.

Nosferatu was so creepy, and I loved 28 Days later too I'm mixed on Scream. 1 is a masterpiece, 2 is really good, I thought 3 was bad, and I thought 4 was really mixed. And then I enjoyed the TV show despite flaws. I'd probz rank them 1 > 2 > TV > 4 > 3
How's the new season? I haven't seen yet. I thought 4/5 were a huge step up compared to 1 AND ESPECIALLY 2/3 though
TBH, lacking gore isn't even their biggest issue. They DEFINITELY have some of their genre stuff off and it made me appreciate it less. For example, the final girl in the cheesy 80s think is this bitchy punk rocker tough girl while the shy virgin apparently dies

Good and genuinely creepy, but I find it a little overrated. The characters in particular (who are well acted enough but pretty underdeveloped)

Could not disagree more on lacking substance. The entire movie makes the killer complicit in the film itself. The only way to stop the killers is to turn it off, and the killers themselves imply they're being forced to do this against their wills by an anonymous third party (the viewer)
It's pretty much criticizing society for being desensitized to violence. Probably the best home invasion horror I've seen

I just haven't watched a single horror film that scares me in so long I'm quite sad cuz I'm a horror buff, but nothing gets me the Babadook was the last one that mildly amused me but barely

Good taste. Have you seen Suspiria or Wait Until Dark? Absolute classics.
I just love the Scream series, despite its flaws. The first one is masterpiece though. The best of the bunch.
The new season of TWD is going good so far. There are a lot of new characters being introduced. Nothing to crazy yet. A bunch load of zombies in a valley though.

Suspiria is a MASTERPIECE. 70s-80s Argento is in general amazing. I've seen all his works from then except Four Flies on Grey Velvet. His new stuff.... I didn't hate MoT AS MUCH as other people but. And not seen Wait Until Dark
No lies @ Scream. Who are your fav characters from it?
Mess really? They just thinned out a bunch in S5 too. FOREVER BITTER ABOUT
Beth
How's Aaron? I really liked his and Darryl's friendship and I hope to see more of them
The fourth wall breaking in Funny Games was amazing

R ratings don't create more hype. If that was the case, why hasn't The Green Inferno blown up at the box office? It's a hard R at that. There are plenty of R rated horror films that have flopped. PG-13 horror films are more profitable, most of the time.
|
I know the justifications of its rating, they're ********. "Mood" is not a valid excuse to jump from PG-13 to R, maybe for Saw or Hostel but not for a ****ing haunted house.
And please @ the second half, The Green Inferno was delayed for years and had no promotion, and that's not the kind of movie someone would go to to get scared. The Conjuring, Annabelle, Sinister, Oculus, etc. all had major promotion and were R rated paranormal horrors, which, in case you haven't noticed, has been the trend for the past 5-6 years. TGI maybe could've happened 10 years ago, not today.
R rated paranormal horrors rarely deserve the rating. Mood is not a valid excuse, every 13 year old is seeing those movies anyway. A little bit of blood and gore is thrown in for that R rating and BOOM! Scariest movie of the decade!

It really is. Dario has really fallen off though. It's so sad.
Watch Wait Until Dark if you can. So great.
My favorite character in the first film was Tatum. So much so that I named my cat after her. Her death from the garage door.
I can't believe how sad I was about her as well. Miss her!
No Aaron this first episode. He's featured heavily in the next one though.
It really was. It's one of the favorite moments by many.

The mood was disturbing enough for them to give it an R rating.
What does the delay have to do with anything? It was also only delayed due to the company who owned the rights going bankrupt. It was put it in limbo until a new distributor came along. And it had PLENTY of promotion, it also doesn't have to follow any trend to get recognized. I didn't go a day without seeing a trailer or advertisement online. And how is a movie about a group of people being cannalbalized not something to be scared of? It's a horror movie. So to say no one would see it to be scared, when that's the whole intention, is lazy and wrong. An R rating doesn't equal hit or public attention.
All the R rated paranormal films you mentioned all earned their ratings because that's the way the MPAA felt was appropriate. No matter how little blood, or weak scares, you feel filled it.

"Sequences of disturbing violence and terror" isn't even mood though, so that had nothing to do with the rating even the people on IMDB's parent guide agree that it could've been PG-13 if they edited a few scenes.
The first trailer was released over a year ago. It was supposed to be out last September. Any hype the movie may have had built up and died as it was delayed indefinitely. But like... no one actually expected it to be a commercial success anyway so I don't know why you're even using it as an example? The GP is over torture ****. TGI was meant to be a throwback and to cater to Eli's cult following. If you think genre doesn't matter, please look at the top grossing horror films for the past five years and find me a largely successful original non-paranormal horror movie. Actually, I'll save you the trouble, there isn't one.
If you truly think that an R rating has no impact on how scary one anticipates a horror movie to be, well... that's uneducated and wrong.
And like I already said, the movies earned their R ratings by manipulating MPAA guidelines. Content wise, there is nothing that a 13 year old can't handle. A jump scare is not emotionally scarring like the content of films like Hostel or Saw could be.

Am I the only one who hated Funny Games? It was long, drawn out, and unfulfilling.

Am I the only who cannot watch Knock Knock? They showed the trailer at the movies when I went to see The Visit and I literally wasn't able to watch the trailer because of the things girls did to that guy. I hope it's not just me.

"Sequences of disturbing violence and terror" are alluding straight to the mood. Expect to experience a scary film with disturbing violence and terror. Which means horror. Which means scary and uncomfortable.... Oh and terrifying....How isn't that mood?
When the trailer is released doesn't matter. When the film is actually released matters. And you're acting like the fans of his and those who anticipated it have somehow forgotten it. The hype and promo has been crazy coming up to its release. When didn't say it was going to be a box office success? I'm using the formulas you said is used to get people in seats. You said they manipulate the ratings board for publicity. That film is the definition of doing that. You never made a specific example of ONLY paranormal rated R films. You said rated R horror films do so to manipulate the audience and ratings board. Not my problem that the genre isn't "popular" now.
And when did I say horror fans don't want and prefer R rated films? That's been my point from the getgo, and one of the reason I won't watch The Final Girls. So don't even try to call me uneducated. Especially on the subject of film.
The didn't manipulate anything. They got the appropriate ratings for the content they hold. Deal with it. It's not changing no matter how much you feel the rating isn't deserved. You aren't on MPAA.

so, guys!
two questions for the horror people in here
1) what movies have you lined up to watch for/before halloween (what's become a tradition to watch every halloween?)
2) what are your favorite gialli?
well, those are kinda 2 1/2 questions, but i rarely post in the horror section here and just wanted to see what you guys are into since i am a huge horror buff and always enjoy a good discussion about the genre

It looks beyond amazing. Of course it is most likely a fidgety mess but I'm all for it just because of the cast and the ambience.
