Wes is a good protagonist. He's smart. He's handsome. He knows what he's doing. He's curious and distraught without being annoying like other sole protagonists in a world full of evil characters (See: Grace in Scream Queens, who's TRAGIC.).

I agree with this wholeheartedly. It's really refreshing. All of Hotel feels really fresh tbh.
I think he served as detective and father both at the same time. I could not imagine Evan to play a role like this. Maybe Dylan McDermott but in comparison with Wes I hate Dylan. I couldn't stand him in Murder House. Neither was he likeable in Asylum.
As a protagonist he needs to have more screen time. It makes sense that he would investigate the Hotel and its guests. Otherwise you could still watch the Countess and Donovan having sex with their victims and the story wouldn't move on.
i don't have problem with the character, i have problem with Wes acting, i don't think he is suitable for playing detective at all, evan would have been even worse choice for the Character
So The countess is the owner of the hotel but in the episode iris says she's never met the owner. but she prepares the countess' victims so she knows who she is. I guess the countess hasn't told her she's the owner.
But he wasn't really a villain, though. I need an evil murderer-- more on the psychotic side rather than the glam side (sorry, Donovan & Countess, even though I love them).
