I don't think Ryan tried to hide the fact that they gave her little dialogue... he said in numerous interviews he was going to try to ease her into it. For all we know she gained some confidence after the first episode. (hopefully).
The fact that the reviews are mixed is a good sign IMO.
Everything is truly going to be left up to interpretation until the episode airs.
