Visually, the premiere episode is a stunner, from the hotel set to the use of a fish-eye lens on the camera that squeezes so much into the frame. Even Lady Gaga’s look and manner suggests a cross between a vampire queen and a less-animated, pose-happy Morticia Addams. The goal with Gaga’s character and many of the other characters/creatures introduced seems to be oblique mystery and “Hotel” accomplishes that with a constant “What the….??” guessing game.
Heavy on atmosphere in its early going and light on plot, a storyline starts to kick in around the premiere’s halfway point. Wes Bentley stars as John Lowe, a cop and the closest the show gets to a straight-arrow hero. He and his wife (Chloe Sevigny, “Those Who Kill”) suffered a loss in their family that seems like it will connect them to the Hotel Cortez as John investigates murders while trying to protect his family from a disembodied voice that taunts him by phone.
