And Toxic immunity.
I'm not saying it would have been a flop without its Poison typing. I'm just saying that Poison types did have a place in the meta in past gens, Gengar being a prime example. If you're looking for other examples, what about Tentacruel, Venusaur and Crobat?

I think ppl are only saying it's ghost typing is a bigger part of why it was successful (ie: spinblocking, shadow ball barely being resisted, etc). Of course poison is one of the best defensive types in the game (though Gengar's ghost typing undermines that somewhat, as the fighting resistance is usually big selling point), and has a lot of great utility 'mons.

All of them have other types that added a ton to their viability (with the exception of Venusaur, who just got lucky with the ability + state of the metagame). None of them had their usefulness attached to their typing.
Tentacruel was a bulky water and a spinner. That gave him a niche little Pokemon could actually fill.
Venusaur was a run-of-the-mill sub seeder up until Gen 5 (and I will admit toxic immunity is actually great for a sub seeding set) where his niche became sun sweeper. Poison did little to help him as a sun sweeper in Gen 5.
Crobat was a fast utility Pokemon with immunity to entry hazards like spikes. He also had power in Brave Bird, and sustainability through Roost. It was his Flying type and amazing speed that carried him.

Venusaur and Crobat I'll concede, but you have to admit that Tentacruel's Fighting resistance and Grass neutrality helped it at least a little. Poison/Water is actually a really solid defensive type combo, even today.
Also, I think you're really underselling the perk of Toxic immunity. Toxic has been one of stall's most powerful weapons since Gen II, basically putting any Pokemon it hits on a 5-10 turn timer. Immunity to Toxic has always been pretty valuable, to say the least.

Poison needs a legendary, I think its the only type not to have one right?
Although they can keep it if its anything like the gen 4/5 legends

especially* today
Toxic immunity on a defensive pokemon is a blessing, and even moreso since Tentacruel has no reliable recovery or way of removing status ailments without a cleric. And poison does blend well with water, but I don't think that would've mattered much if Tentacruel didn't have as good of Special Defense as he had.

They can keep their poison legendary. The god of all types, Normal, already has one, and that's all that matters.

Where did I lie? Arceus, literal god of all Pokemon, is the best type, Normal. It's really fitting.
(You have Arceus Poison tho isn't that good enough 4 u?)

Poison is not really a good defensive type, it only kinda works on Gengar because of Levitate, lbr.

It's not about the quantity. Ground is a very relevant weakness. You can't just act like it's weak to Bug or something.
If it weren't for that then I'd agree about it being a good defensive typing, it's just decent the way it is, imo.
