Us teens didn't care about Madonna in 94. Mariah was young, talented and fun. I never liked her much, but everyone else did.
Madonna's music in the 90s was too...off-putting and serious. Erotica had strong sales because she'd be coming off her vogue single, so everyone was excited to hear the latest! Remember, we had NO internet or way of previewing songs. Imagine everyone's surprise as they played the album...nonetheless, radio only played "Deeper and Deeper" some. "Bye Bye Baby" flopped and so did "Bad Girl." Anything else past that didn't even make a dent on MTV until "I'll Remember," and "Take a Bow," then "Music" in 1997.
