I haven't listened to Joni that long but she seems to have been someone that cared very strongly about the messages of her music and fought against the commercialization/neutering of music. Didn't she essentially retire because she was fed up with the state of music?

Right, right. Kesha is the modern day Cyndi. Without acclaim, obviously, but she always had a similar flair and the hits to back it up. Kesha will also totally fall off just like Cyndi did.
