It's actually Melissa's main problem, the fact that it's still catering to the pop listener. It's like, let's be weird and out there, but with an overall accessible soundscape. It just falls flat and makes it totally uninteresting to listen to. Especially cause her voice also adds nothing.
Predominantly pop music fans should not try and formulate a solid opinion on progressive music unless it's a positive one, nagl.

Pop music is popular for a reason. FKA branch is hardly progressive just because she doesn't stick to proven song formulas (and instead experiments with ones that don't work as well).
It's unfair and ignorant to call music that's influencing the scene in wildly forward-thinking ways stupid, or to downplay it in its entirety because it's not your cup of tea! Respect where it's due, folks. This message is especially designed for those of you that claim Katy Perry.
