That's not always true. Things being ~*~~**~mainstream;3 has nothing to do with acclaim most of the time. Critics do not care about being edgy and obscure, lmao, they care about music being good and progressive.

Drake, Beyoncé, Madonna and now Weeknd have massive albums that are above an 80 on Metacritic. Back in the day a lot of acclaimed musicians were also household names a la Beatles, Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground, Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, etc.

Except I didn't say mainstream music was always scored lower than non-mainstream. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Generally, the less mainstream albums receive higher scores because people who want to listen to the album and review it do.

Critics loved the big famous pop acts of the 70s/80s/early to mid 90s. You could even say they loved them in the late 2000s with the way critics latched on to GaGa and Taylor. It's possible some of it just doesn't meet their standards. They just don't like bubblegum pop and never have - probably because a lot of artists abuse it.
