Why did they release EMOTION in Japan half a year early? Who does that help?
Since Japan is her biggest market they probably thought that if she managed to dominate there then the hype would spread to other music markets. It's like when you establish a niche fan base first and go after mainstream recognition later. Only problem is that the album is average and it did average numbers in Japan.

I was listening to the New York Times "Popcast" today where they discussed Carly and the album at length and one of the two commentators seemed to think the purpose was to generate hype for the album among tastemakers and music writers.
Personally I just think they were banking on Run Away With Me becoming a hit here. And, well,
