Venus is trash and would have flopped hard. Sex Dreams on the other hand is one of her best songs and would have dominated with a Rihanna remix and some sort of follow up to the PF music video.
Monster also would have smashed and Eh Eh is cute but I'm not sure about full single treatment for it. DITD would have flopped. Heavy Metal Lover would have flopped.
ARTPOP needed a riskier first single. I think Venus could have been a hit if they played their cards right.

Applause was & is the perfect lead single for 'ARTPOP', hence why it became a hit. No other songs could have done what Applause did. Not even Do What U Want.
Aura or Venus as the lead = era dead the first day.
One could argue that Sexxx Dreams could have been a great choice, but meh. It's not strong enough to be a lead single, imo.
ARTPOP would have been a LOT better had she trimmed off all the fat and kept it cute.

That's nice actually. I'm not a fan of Aura at all, but the song is pretty much 'ARTPOP' in 3 minutes so yeah.

Basically. And given Gags' situation, I'm not sure people would have let her a 2nd chance with a 2nd single. That's why I believe Applause / Do What U Want was the best combo. It's just a shame the negativity around the era made it impossible for Gags to win.
