This isn't my opinion, but I saw this comment on a video of an upload for the final battle between Ariel, Eric and Ursula in The Little Mermaid.

It said this:
"I never realized until now just how pathetic a villain Ursula is. She spends most of the film trying to achieve her goal, then immediately after getting it, it's just failure after failure after failure: fails to kill Ariel, gets wounded by Eric, accidentally kills her minions, gets killed by Eric, having successfully killed NOBODY. At least Jafar got to savor his victory for a day or so, and Scar got to be king for a few years before Simba came back."

That comment is the basis for this thread and debate. Ursula is one of Disney's more iconic villains. Do you think she's overrated or is her iconicness justified?

I swear I got scared to death everytime I watched that scene. I think the whole wizard-snake-genie transition scene it's one of the scariest scenes Disney has ever made tbh.

Add on to this that in the source material the sea witch wasn't a villain, she was just a... what's the word? When a character is just a means to an end? When they don't have any sort of motive, they're just doing their job? I can't remember.

The point is that Disney made the witch a villain, because you can't make a kid's movie without having clear cut good and bad archetypes.

And, no, Ursula isn't a very good villain. She does have a very big persona, though. Of course, that comes from the fact that she's camp and based on drag performers... which is probably why the gays love her so much...

If you see the Platinum Edition extras, in the original storyline Ursula knocks out Ariel and tries to drown Eric with her tentacle until Sebastian using all his might gives him the trident that fell in the water. As Eric is being submerged and closer to drowning, he manages to grab it and hurl it at Ursula striking her in the chest.
