I feel like they're marketing Mariah now as a Legend. Not the current, relevant type but the Aretha/Barbra type. What do you guys think?

This year has all been about her catalog and touting her success rather than innovative ways of introducing her to new fans.

Not saying this is a bad thing, just an interesting strategy before her next album.

Marketing plan: Basically take advantage of #Beautiful to build momentum and release You Don't Know What To Do in 2013 as second single, market the album as the personal statement of a matured Mariah, and focus on the more timeless aspects of the album and focus the album more toward mature audiences (as much as I love Thirsty, songs like that work more against her than for her in my opinion).

I figured it would at least go gold if released after #Beautiful.

I just wanted to stop by and share the redesigned album.

Agree with most of this (esp. removing Thirsty ) but OMT as the 4th single?! That's weird. Go with Dedicated instead

IS: The million-dollar question: What do you think would have happened if you had never met Tommy Mottola?
MC: I already had a deal with Warner Bros. that was pending. It was through Ben Margulies, who I had written most of my first album with — lots of it when I was in high school. I used to come in and work at his studio, which was [at the back of a loft space that was covered in wood chips] and I wrote "Vision of Love" there, songs that became number one hits that I don't listen to anymore. "Someday" was a number one hit — I wrote it and recorded it there. And a song that [I was offered a] publishing deal for called "All In Your Mind" — it was on my first album [1990's Mariah Carey]. [Someone at another company] was like, "We'll give you 5,000 for this!

I think she's in a place now where they don't know how to market her and most of her marketing (before Vegas) felt unfocused.

If they're going to go for the "Legend" marketing plan (like they're doing now), will her next studio album conform to this image? Or will she try to put out more tracks like Thirsty?

I think they need to see what kind of music she wants to put out first, then go from there. If it's in her heart to try to get an all-format or pop hit (whether that's realistic or not, giving how radio treats her), then fine, but they need to market her better AND HIRE NEW GRAPHIC DESIGNERS. If she wants to put out a more R&B album (like much of Memoirs/MIAM), then they need to focus their attention on that market. There were tracks on MIAM that could have been R&B/urban hits.
