What the difference between an icon and a legend to you?

I ask because I see people throwing them up with no clear sign of the meaning.

In ATRL, LEGEND is when Rihanna has new candids wearing neon lipstick or Lady Gaga in a button shaped hairstyle. In reality, legend is someone who is timeless like Madonna and Michael Jackson. Legends happen to be icons (as influential fashion, politics, music or cultural figures) as well.

A Legend is someone who paved the way for the younger artist. Without the Legend ie. Michael, Madonna, The Beetles, Elvis, etc. The artist of today who are striving for that legendary status wouldn't be here.

An Icon on the other hand is more leaning towards their influenece on fashion, politics etc. Like Mazen stated.

Wouldn't an icon also represent a time period but not be a legend? Like Donna Summers is icon of the 70's and disco but she isn't really a legend perse.

Hilary Duff happen to be an icon too (as an actress, perfume designer, multi-million selling artist, SPOKESPERSON, fashion designer, appearing on Sims 2 Pets, entrepreneur) as well.
