She sounded good with Evita thanks to her training, but I have my suspicions that she didn't maintain proper technique forever and started to damage her voice exploring her more full range and voice.
I have to agree that she was at her most enjoyable earlier on - 80's Madonna is clearly distinct from the rest and she had a different spirit about her then. She grew as an artist and a person in the 90's and then more in the 2000's, but not really in ways everyone could (or should!) like.
It seems to me like she's more two artists than one, on a large scale: pre-American Life, and post-American Life. Some people like one, some like both, and of course some neither. She can be broken down further but most people who I talk to who refer to "old Madonna" mean either Music and before or RoL and before.
