Roommate: 'He wanted something big like Trayvon Martin'
How did Dylann Roof get to the point of being accused of one of the most hateful, violent race-related crimes in recent memory?

His uncle, Carson Cowles, told The Washington Post that Roof's mother "never raised him to be like this." Those who knew him, though, paint a picture of someone who has long voiced racist sentiments, even if they never anticipated he'd act on them like this.

John Mullins recalls "racist slurs in a sense" that Roof made while the two attended White Knoll High School in Lexington, South Carolina, though he also remembers him having black friends.

"He would say it just as a joke," Mullins told CNN. "I never took it seriously. But ... maybe (I) should have."

Joey Meek told ABC that talk of reinstating segregation was nothing new for Roof, his roommate. He'd been plotting something for six months, though authorities weren't tipped off.

"I think he wanted something big like Trayvon Martin," Meek said, referring to the black Florida teen whose shooting death at the hands of George Zimmerman -- who was acquitted of murder -- provoked huge protests. "He wanted to make something spark up the race war again."

The families confronted him at the bond hearing today. Bails for the murder charges can't be set yet, but the judge has one for the gun. It's set at $1 milliion. The Justice Department is thinking of trying it as a terrorism act.

This event is so sad and its just another reminder of how crazy this world is. Considering that he reportedly sat in the church for an hour before firing just shows that we can never truly trust those around us. Absolutely insane and mind-blowing

It seems like racial tensions are higher than they've been in years ever since 2012 or so. Of course hate crimes always happen, but the protesting has really made an impact and I think more and more people are getting the message. Maybe its not exactly racial tensions, more like people spreading awareness of how our society works with race and what needs to be changed.

I really really wish the victims' family members would stop being so "gracious" and "forgiving".

Forgiveness is great blah blah blah, NO. It only makes white people feel more sympathetic towards that scum and makes people think it's ok or not a big deal. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. It's because they're religious and dumb. Just like they let this kid just walk in there and sit down with them because that's the "holy" thing to do and "god loves all his children." Girl bye. Let's leave religion out of this. Who and what these people worship and how they choose to grieve have little to do with the fact that these innocent people lives were taken. It sucks families choose to forgive, but deep down I know that there is a lot of hurt and a bit of hatred for the way these people were murdered.

This is exactly what I've been saying. Our community chooses to sit back & hide behind prayers instead of standing up doing something. This is not a time to forgive & forget, I know the family is grieving but the community as a whole needs to wake the **** up.
