Because of how difficult some Kanji is, furigana is like a cheat. 99% of Kanji has more than one way to pronounce it (and a vast majority have over 2) so you need to know in what situation is the Kanji pronounced one way or the other. So furigana is hiragana (or rarely katakana) written above or below kanji that tells you how to pronounce it
TL;DR it's for people who know hiragana but cannot read Kanji yet and they want to know what something says quickly
