It's kinda complex so I understand the confusion, it's dative case (partially) which is really antiquated in English, and we usually just use accusative case instead. It's the same sort of mistake as using 'who' where you are supposed to use 'whom'.

But using a gerund there is a lot more commonplace than "whom".
