Aaliyah is more higher regarded today, and is more listened to, impacted, and regarded by the youth and current generation. But is it because of her death? Hell yes.

Aaliyah at the moment she was alive wasn't a force at all. She had 1 3x Platinum album, that contained 2 hits. Then a 2nd album following 3 or so hits + 2 Soundtrack singles. She was never a force, or something people looked out for. Her album debuted with 200K during the highest year for album debuts ever -- mostly because her lead single flopped tho.

Her career was starting to have a winged fall, but that was the music. You could make the argument she'd be bigger than Brandy even if she was alive because her movie career was really taking off. Queen of the Damned, Matrix 2 & 3, Sparkle, and Honey were happening. She had some acclaim in music, but literally none of it was groundbreaking. She had no GRAMMYs, and ultimately people weren't putting Aaliyah on all-time lists with her albums when she was alive.

I think her music career could've went both ways, personally. She died RIGHT before Urban took over 2002-2005; so who's to say she wouldn't have had some Urban hits and went mainstream? Then after Urban takeover Timbaland took over in 2006-2009. Who's to say she wouldn't have done more Timbaland work? You can't really say she would've flopped with sureness when you consider her area of music was becoming huge trends in the 2000's.

However as it was when she was alive, she was underperforming and leaning towards a movie career being much more relevant.

There's nothing about Brandy in these paragraphs but this is an interesting way to look at Aaliyah's career.

I did talk about B-sis. I said Aaliyah was in a further position today in legacy because her death; but still could've been ahead with her slaying the movie industry.

She could've easily just been an R&B J. Lo. Turned to blockbusters when her career in music went flat, and that still would put her above Brandy today who's busy doing Broadway and BET Shows.

If you take out The Boy Is Mine, Brandy wasn't really ever THAT ahead and stomping on Aaliyah in music. Blackground was a terrible label and messed with the stats for Aaliyah a lot.

When it comes to influence, it's Aaliyah > Brandy. Imitation speaks louder than words. Tinashe can not claim Aaliyah all she wants, but she is a label puppet like the rest and a Janet/Aaliyah clone like the rest.

Musically, I think Brandy is more influential that Aaliyah.

But visually, I think Aaliyah was more influential. Brandy didn't have a specific type of style/dress.

Musically? There is nothing distinct about Brandy's music, and I don't hear not a thing in today's R&B music that screams "Brandy."

However, Aaliyah's style can be heard and seen in a lot of these girls' music and looks. Let's just call it what it is. Brandy was bigger in the '90s, but she's also a relic of her time. Aaliyah's death inflated her legacy, but she's still more influential on today's artists than Brandy. Fact, not fiction.

Ciara was always compared to Aaliyah to the point that she had to pretend that she was never influenced by her, same with Tinashe.

If you watch Ciara's Access Granted for "1, 2 Step," she talks about the Aaliyah comparison and how it makes her sad when people compare the two.

Considering people here like to make fun of (and lie about) my age, then I would know. I can actually remember when Aaliyah was alive and when Ciara was successful. There was always the Aaliyah comparison, hence why Ciara and Aaliyah fans have been clashing since '04.

How I feel also influenced Keyshia Cole's "I Should've Cheated"

not to mention Afrodisiac influence Rihanna's biggest album.

Brandy only has 7 Top 10 hits.

Aaliyah had 4 pre-death but Billboard themselves confirmed Are You That Somebody? would've atleast peaked #4 had it not been allowed to chart once it already had long peaked. On top of that One In a Million was a huge R&B hit, and wasn't released physically so it could've charted. That's 6 give or take, and If Your Girl Only Knew peaked at #11 so in reality there wasn't much difference.

Aaliyah's debut outsold Brandy's debut.
Brandy's sophomore outsold Aaliyah's sophomore.

Had Aaliyah not died her album would've ended up Platinum w/ it's 200K debut like Brandy's junior album ended Platinum.

Their careers were basically the same level, except Brandy had the monster hit over her.
