The young acts continue to claim Aaliyah too. They have for the past 10 years.
Go home.
Aaliyah is an Urban fashion icon. Brandy is not.
But I'm not fighting you on this.
Again
Tanishe doesn't claim her
Aaliyah doesn't own any attire that TLC hasn't already been did. It's only until it's combined with long black hair that people make the comparison
Aaliyah is toe to toe at best. I follow Brandy so I see ordinary folk on my explore page replicating Brandys sound just like that. Aaliyah sound is defined by timbaland and what he did in the studio. Brandy actually has iconic motifs and runs
On a more serious note, I don't want to see 20 Y.O. or Discipline Janet again. I want another thematic album from her because she excels at making them. I want to see and hear the growth in her artistic evolution. I'm hoping for the best but I've very anxious.
Ay we back though
The sun's still there, look
Good morning baby, didn't mean to wake you
But the buy-in is your precious time and my temptation
Never mind that, I guess I'll climb the ladder later
'Less you try and put your back on me then I'ma take it
What is this, macchiato I'm tasting?
Caffeinated your body, I swear that y'all only stay up
Grab a towel, she need it, now she open again
She say my stroke is a scone, I let that soak in her bean
What's up with it? Ok what's really good (more)
I never know your bad side until you show your good
Ok what's up with it? Just let me set the mood
She said she don't on the first night, the morning wood
We talk, recent movies and old tunes
Emulate 50 Shades over Jodeci grooves
But I'm joking, I'm tryna sing your body that notion
If nobody throw me a float, then I'ma drown in the ocean
Come and take this work
**** around and be late to work
As the conversation fades let's play "you hang up first"
With your silly self, pictures in my celly, well
Kisses give her goosebumps, well that's cool I used to tutor braille
'Sup baby, ain't mean to wake you
I can put you back to sleep if that's a consolation
And I'm tired of waiting, so no more disappointment
I'm not your regular Joe, I'll be your coffee in the morning
Imo, I agree. Aaliyah is the Rihanna to Brandy's Beyonce. Well, minus the single success. Brandy was literally all around more successful than her. As Damien said, her death elevated her.
No Wait you're misquoting me!
That was about Beyonce/Aaliyah
Brandy is a complete nobody, however.
Queen Li >> her anyday.
Get real. No one copies Brandy. Brandy is a nostalgic act at best, and this is coming from someone who loves her.
When it comes to influence, it's Aaliyah > Brandy. Imitation speaks louder than words. Tinashe can not claim Aaliyah all she wants, but she is a label puppet like the rest and a Janet/Aaliyah clone like the rest.
Aaliyah is more higher regarded today, and is more listened to, impacted, and regarded by the youth and current generation. But is it because of her death? Hell yes.
Aaliyah at the moment she was alive wasn't a force at all. She had 1 3x Platinum album, that contained 2 hits. Then a 2nd album following 3 or so hits + 2 Soundtrack singles. She was never a force, or something people looked out for. Her album debuted with 200K during the highest year for album debuts ever -- mostly because her lead single flopped tho.
Her career was starting to have a winged fall, but that was the music. You could make the argument she'd be bigger than Brandy even if she was alive because her movie career was really taking off. Queen of the Damned, Matrix 2 & 3, Sparkle, and Honey were happening. She had some acclaim in music, but literally none of it was groundbreaking. She had no GRAMMYs, and ultimately people weren't putting Aaliyah on all-time lists with her albums when she was alive.
I think her music career could've went both ways, personally. She died RIGHT before Urban took over 2002-2005; so who's to say she wouldn't have had some Urban hits and went mainstream? Then after Urban takeover Timbaland took over in 2006-2009. Who's to say she wouldn't have done more Timbaland work? You can't really say she would've flopped with sureness when you consider her area of music was becoming huge trends in the 2000's.
However as it was when she was alive, she was underperforming and leaning towards a movie career being much more relevant.
Tinashe doesn't remind me of Aaliyah in any way. She DOES, however, remind me of Ciara. Especially her dancing and the "crunk" beats on 2 On/All Hands on Deck.

Ironically, Ciara is an Aaliyah clone and she received a ton of comparisons when she dropped her first album. Ha.

Well. I don't see why it has to be one or the other. No need to bring another down to raise another up . Both impacted in different ways. That being said.
