There is barely an overarching plot, the chapters have no real story, there are no well-developed characters, the environments are lacking because of how they're divided (Super Mario Bros.-style worlds) and it has a flawed, simplistic combat system that doesn't allow for combat growth and actually discourages you from fighting.
They basically stripped the game of all RPG elements and broke any potential in the gameplay. It may have been a fun game if it wasn't marketed as an RPG and as a
Paper Mario game, but it was and failed to meet the standards of either.
To its credit, the soundtrack and visuals are actually fantastic, but they're wasted since the game is shallow and boring.
