Rap/Hip Hop went through a drought for a couple of years, but it's probably the most interesting genres in terms of evolution and trends.

It's the rappers who weren't the most commercially successful that stood the test of time. Compare Nas, Common and to a lesser extent Jay-Z to DMX, 50 Cent and Nelly who were massively successful. It's so weird.
Weren't DMX, 50 Cent and Nelly outselling Jay-Z at one point?

Eminem & Jay-Z are really the only rappers who's been able to keep a good hard decade with constant success and technically no flops, even if they had some underperformances for their standards along the way. But that's the #whitepower that helped that a lot of the time for Em, and Jay-Z is by far the least risk-taking rapper and clings to anything popular by the moment.
The way he toured with JT, then Beyonce, released a lead single with JT, did a Platinum deal with Samsung, suppose to be doing a Bey collab album etc.
They always say Beyonce is the one scared to flop, but it's truly Jay-Z. Remember he got on Twitter and had a meltdown with Bill Werde when Soundscan wouldn't count those cheated 1M sales? Or that TIDAL meltdown he recently had.

Drake is going to stay for sure. 50's decline is the most surprising though. His songs were huge.

I always thought that it was because the ones who really fell off don't have any classic albums. DMX is probably the exception, but Luda, 50 Cent, Nelly, ect. don't really have an album that hip hop heads really go up for and once the pop world moved on, they didn't have much to fall back on.

Seriously, black women need to stop supporting black men who don't support them.

So who will stand the test of time and who will be the thing of the past?
Bye Drake.
But who else?

I wasn't shocked at the 50 decline. 50 thrived a lot off of Hip Hop beefs. Of course, gimmicks like that are only good for a short period of time. Plus, his music was very much of its time.
I remember BET did their new millennium list for Best Rappers, and Nelly wasn't included. He went on ESPN and said he was furious because he outsold everyone on that list except 50 Cent and Eminem.

When Kanye called Jay-Z out.

I told Jay I did a song with Coldplay
Next thing I know he got a song with Coldplay

Then Jay-Z ended up clinging to an album with him.

I do think Jay-Z's leeching has become gross.
Magna Carta Holy Fail was an atrocious album. It's sad that Nas was able to put out one of his best efforts in years but didn't get nearly as much attention as that ****** album.

Lol mess.
But still. At a point he was bigger than 90% of the pop stars and then he just disappeared. You'd think he would have at least two huge eras considering how big he was at his peak.

I think it was because he took a long break that helped ease his way out the door

Jay's song with Coldplay is better though. And came out before Graduation.
