Spotify will definately help Cheerleader. The song was already released there and it was top5.
Now it will probably jump at #1.
See You Again will need a couple of days to reach the highest positions.
Style obviously wouldn't have been a big hit even if it had been released in advance of the album. Shake It Off (obvs the only decent single from this era) has held up nicely and hasn't been affected even slightly by these album sales supposedly so monumental that they "stole" most of the singles' prospective buyers.
Interesting how far Blank Space has fallen, though. It was literally one number one single ago.
That was 14 weeks ago, the blind belittlement of her achievements
If I'm honest, I'd rather see Cheerleader get #1 over See You Again. I understand the emotional sentiment behind the song but it's actually quite dull if you ask me
'Hold My Hand' is going to be a huge summer hit in the US.
You'd think people would learn. Last year everyone was proclaiming that Rather Be, Hideaway, Waves, Prayer in C, I Got U, etc. would be huge in the U.S., and none of them were.
I really don't think the album selling a lot can keep a song from going number one. There are 300 million people in this country. 6 million people buy your album doesn't mean another 6 million can't enjoy your third single enough to stream, buy, and listen to it on the radio.
What about Katy? Sure TD wasn't as big as phenomenon as Adele, but that didn't stop her from selling a good amount of the album and releasing five huge smashes. I'm not talking about sales of a song, I'm talking peak on the Hot 100. Adele sold how many copies of 21 by the time Set Fire to the Rain hit #1? With no promo of the song whatsoever? Not even a video?
I just don't think it's a valid excuse. Style did really well though, #6 is not something to scoff at.
Huge album sales don't stop a single from being a hit and selling good, even before the digital era there was singles AND albums selling the most from one artist.
Whitney had IWALY sell 630K during the Holidays in 1 week, while the album was selling 1,061,000 at the same exact time.
It was the highest sales week for a single in history at the time, AND the highest sales week for an album in history at the time. Literally during a time when people had to go to the store and see both next to each other, both still sold amazingly at the same exact time and broke the records.
If that can happen, then nothing is stopping it from happening in the digital era.

Streaming is actually more helpful to help songs become #1 hits after the album has sold a shitload.
Even if 3M fans already bought the album containing the song, and refuse to purchase it -- they're gonna view the music video, which helps it on the charts. Which wasn't the case then.

You're so right on everything you have stated so far. I like Streaming is included on Billboard's formula now, if people have already bought the album and they refuse to get a third or fourth single, they can watch the video on VEVO or YouTube or stream the song on Spotify and that would help the song on its chart run. Sales are not the only ones that measure how popular a song can be.
