Shut Up and Dance got promo on Dancing With The Stars because a couple danced to it, it's a surprise to me that it helped it to go #2 I didn't thought that show would really help, also it looks like the promo effect already stopped but it still stabilized at #2
1 Wiz Khalifa - See You Again (feat. Charlie Puth) 1.0000
2 WALK THE MOON - Shut Up and Dance 0.2966
3 The Weeknd - Earned It 0.2700
4 Flo Rida - GDFR (feat. Sage the Gemini & Lookas) 0.2566
5 Mark Ronson - Uptown Funk (feat. Bruno Mars) 0.2466

Ugh at this snoozy Wiz/Ryan Tedder wannabe THING continuing to gain. The GP is truly the worst.

Yeah, poor Walk The Moon, I'm sure they must be feeling terrible having the #2 song on iTunes in the biggest music market

I read the same article and posted the numbers first. BB gives 168,000 as the total for SYA, but does not confirm the song finished at #1 on HDS. I think SYA probably beat UF on the HDS Chart, but the information provided does not confirm this.

no, it's definitely not, considering one sweet day was the #1 song of the entire 90s decade. even if it was close to that level you couldn't tell for sure because sales weren't the same back then as they are now, so there's no equal playing field you can use to compare them. you can't say it's bigger.

Well, UF so far has 13 sales #1 weeks and 11 radio #1 weeks.
One Sweet Day had the reverse.
I'd say UF is more impressive.

1 Wiz Khalifa - See You Again (feat. Charlie Puth) 1.0000
2 WALK THE MOON - Shut Up and Dance 0.2966
that really is one hell of a lead
also
2 WALK THE MOON - Shut Up and Dance 0.2966
5 Mark Ronson - Uptown Funk (feat. Bruno Mars) 0.2456
and since the second version is out of the top 100, + less than .376
that means shut up and dance is ahead of uptown funk...now that's two songs. i think the domination is mostly over, after so long. but...
8 Maroon 5 - Sugar 0.2335
42 Maroon 5 - Sugar 0.0774
that also means sugar is ahead of both of them o.e
also, earned it seems to be slowing down after the voice's gains, so i think walk the moon are safe at #2 for now, as long as they don't fall too hard after the promo hype dies down.
14 Andy Grammer - Honey, I'm Good. 0.1461
this is so high : O
31 Sia - Elastic Heart 0.0969
nice! this has managed to stay in the top 100 consistently without much radio support even before the promo, so i could see it being a hit
71 Mumford & Sons - Believe 0.0513
look at this sneaking back in here

One Sweet Day spent two weeks longer at #1 in the 1996 chart year than Macarena, but the latter song outsold OSD by about 1.3 million physical singles just that chart year (and about two million total), and Macarena finished #1 for the year of 1996. Macarena also spent longer in the Top 10 than OSD (23 v. 19 wks.), Top 40 (37 v. 26 wks.), and Hot 100 (40 v. 27 wks 1996 chart year stay; and Macarena spent 20 more weeks on the Hot 100 in 1995 giving a total of 60 weeks, more than twice OSD's stay). OSD was a better song than Macarena, but like Lose Yourself, OSD's chart life outside of its stay at #1 was very short.

One Sweet Day's airplay peak: #1 (13 weeks)
Macarena's airplay peak: #7
Even with the much bigger sales advantage over any song in 1996, it's airplay peak was very low, especially for a #1 of over 10 weeks. It never even reached T5 for 1 week.
Sales AND Airplay are measured overall, and so at the end of the day, One Sweet Day why in those departments combined (also spending many weeks at #1 in sales). Which is why it became Song of the Decade instead. Macarena was a huge hit + had great sales, but OSD excelled in both departments.

The yearly charts are based on points accumulated throughout the year, which in 1996 was clearly dominated by Macarena, due to its huge sales and longevity. Airplay had nothing to do with this method of OSD's 1990s decade ranking, which simply went by weeks at #1.
If the biggest selling song were ranked #1 in the 1990s, "Candle In The Wind 1997/Something About The Way You Look Tonight" would've been #1. The 1990s chart where BB actually bases the decades rankings on each song chart performance actually puts "How Do I Live" at #1, even though it peaked at #2 for four nonconservative weeks. However, the song spent 25 weeks in the Top 5, 32 weeks in the Top 10, and 61 weeks in the Top 40. OSD finishes behind several songs when using the latter two methods to rank the biggest songs of the 1990s.
And as for Airplay, OSD had a long run at #1, but "Don't Speak" and "Iris" each spent over a year on the HRS chart instead of only 27 weeks. Carey's "We Belong Together" had a much better run, both in terms of longevity, strength, and multiformat success on HRS than OSD. OSD peaked at #2 for eight weeks on the BB R&B Charts, behind Whitney Houston's "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)."

I was talking about the decade-end chart, and Mariah's points were split between 1995/1996, so comparing the year-end chart runs isn't really fair.
Lol if the 90's decade-end list was powered by who spent the most weeks at #1, how come Usher's 'You Make Me Wanna...' which peaked at #2, ended up #45 -- higher than My All, Vision of Love, ...Baby One More Time, and many more songs that actually hit #1?
Yes, OSD wasn't THE biggest song on radio in the 90's but the examples you gave had 0 sales. So that's another case of, 'even if that song was slaying sales or radio, OSD had both, which is why it ended up being Song of the Decade'.
