Rumor has it that Kelly recorded Already Gone BEFORE Beyonce recorded Halo right?
According to sources Ryan Tedder said in a radio interview (which I didn't hear so this is rumor obviously) that he wrote Halo specifically for Leona Lewis at the request of Simon Cowell. However, due to her schedule she was unable to record it and so it got shelved.
Ryan went into the studio with Kelly, wrote and recorded Already Gone. Beyonce was at the mixing studio with the guy who mixed Already Gone for Kelly and Ryan and he played it for her. She supposedly called up Ryan and asked for a song just like Already Gone so Ryan reworked Halo and she recorded it, rushed out her album release and that song as a single to supposedly beat Kelly to the punch. Given Beyonce's history this sounds plausible.
The songs don't even sound similar after the first 10 second so I'm not sure where the "rip off" vibe comes from.
I will say Already Gone is the far superior of the two IMO and any ripping off was done in the production of the song and not lyrically or even vocally.
I do agree though that Cry is a more touching/moving song however Ryan Tedder was guaranteed 2nd or 3rd single and the choices for that are
Already Gone
If I can't have you
Impossible
Save You
There is also a track called Tip of My Tongue which would've been great but will probably never get radio play due to it's status as a bonus track.
of those choices IMO Already Gone is the best option for a single release. Kelly has released two songs at this point which she had no hand in writing so I'm guessing it was important to her that she get a song out there that she wrote on.
and to those saying she should release Long Shot? HELL NO! it's enough that one Katy Perry song got released another one back to back? overkill. Plus Kelly's strength is her ballads so she needs to release a ballad and attract those fans who loved Because of You.
I have to wonder if it's possible they are saving Cry for something else.... perhaps a movie soundtrack (wishful thinking)
