On a Tuesday night in November 2004, Scott Borchetta held a meeting with an aspiring 14-year-old singer-songwriter and her team.
Borchetta was preparing to leave Universal Music Nashville to start his own record label, and he had a hunch he could persuade the lanky blond teen to come with him as his first artist.
"I intentionally had them come in at 7 p.m., because I knew I was leaving, and I knew she might be special," says Borchetta, reflecting on his first meeting with Taylor Swift. "She was so unique as a person. She was a giggly little girl, then, in a heartbeat, incredibly sophisticated. She was always smart."
Over the next decade, the Borchetta/Swift team would combine to make her one of the world's biggest pop stars and make him the head of the biggest independent record label, in terms of sales and radio airplay. The rosters of the five labels under the Big Machine Label Group include not only Swift but Florida Georgia Line, Tim McGraw, Brantley Gilbert, the Band Perry and Reba McEntire.
I'm 99% sure that Bad Blood will be 4th single. Song of summer is upon her. Another potential nomination for her on upcoming Grammy, Best pop duo/group performance - Bad Blood (feat. Kanye West)
