Mezik's Music Review ♪♫
Carly Rae Jepsen - 'I Really Like You'
Album: 'tbd.'
Canadian's bubblegum pop Princess has released a comeback single, and unfortunately it falls short of what everyone was expecting.
Staying true to her 90s neo-pop feel the song opens up with heavy pop beats and immediately feels like a dance party. However, that's the only thing that works for the song - the production. Nobody can deny Carly's talent for song writing but after several listens the song almost sounds as if it's an annoyance and bother than something catchy and clever. Where 'Call Me Maybe' was successful for being simple and light spirited, 'I Really Like You' feels forced and not very captivating. Perhaps if another starlet sang this song it could have sounded a lot more enjoyable but the delivery in Carly's vocal makes it seem like there was little chance for this to ever be a hit.
Another problem with this single is the fact that it sounds almost identical to her former lead single from her album 'Kiss', 'This Kiss'. Perhaps I may be reaching for saying this but the rhythm patterns and structure of the songs do not offer anything to distinct the songs from each other. Again, if this song was something fresh or something we already have not heard from Carly we would enjoy it but that is not the case.
Overall I think the label is desperate to try to repeat the success of her breakout single 'Call Me Maybe' and it will most likely end up causing the label, and Carly, more bad than good.

What about Kanye?Isthere really no interest to review All Day?
And I would suggest doing Morning Phase by Beck as a throwback album for obvious reasons.
Carly Rae Jepsen - I really like you
The Call Me Maybe singer is back with another bubblegum pop song that is obviously made in hopes of replicating the success of Call Me Maybe.'Lyrics like I really really really really really like you' could've been written by anyone and have zero creativity or any ambition to make something of importance in any way.The vocals, lyrics and production couldn't be anymore generic and boring than this.
Final Say:When people say "modern music sucks" it is because of music like this that focuses on seling instead of making something with even an ounce of artistic value. And even if you want nothing but basic pop you could get much better stuff since music doesn't get more trivial and emotionless than this.

By the way, Lucas' post reminded me that our third and fourth throwback albums will take place by the end of April.

CARLY RAE JEPSEN - I Really Like You
The Call Me Maybe hitmaker returns with what seems to be sequel of her breakthrough hit. There's one thing that you can count on from her -- she will give you an very catchy earworm! Aside from the slight annoyance of the repetitive chorus, the song is a confession of one's affection for another. Carly magically builds a listenable record with relatable lyrics supported by a throwback 80s synthpop beat. The song may not be as instantly catchy as her former, but there's no denying that Carly's sweet, innocent voice will capture your heart once again. Get ready for this to be a "Song of the Summer" contender. I really like it.

It's hard to forget such an all-encompassing hit like 2012's Call Me Maybe, a hit that evolved into such a vast supernova that it almost swallowed whole the very artist who had put her name to it. Thanks to Owl City, Carly Rae Jepsen isn't by definition a one-hit wonder, however it's enough to concern anyone that the perfectly packaged bubblegum pop of 2012's Kiss never manifested as the era we had all hoped it to be.
It's common for artists in a similar position to feed into meme culture to create something which is so typically eye-catching and invulnerable to under-performing, arguably more than ever in the current age of instantaneous social media. For, say, Nicki Minaj, it was throwing away her serious messages about pills and potions for a thong that didn't so much as leave a single cell of silicon to the imagination. Carly Rae Jepsen's comes in the ever-so-slightly more conservative form of a Tom Hanks-lead music video which dropped two days ago. To cynics, the clear stab at a viral video may seem as contrived as a grown woman clutching onto childish vices, however all these things capture the heart of Carly Rae Jepsen and, more importantly, her new single I Really Like You.
Tom Hanks lipping along whimsically instantly captures the spirit of his 1988 film Big, which is in turn the exact essence of I Really Like You. It's an adrenaline-fuelled rush of energy leading such an innocent confession, capturing the dizzying wonder of falling in love with someone for the first time. It unabashedly celebrates by telling us that, much like Hanks' Josh Baskin in Big, we never truly grow up.
Everything works perfectly here. The 80's drums - to be envied by Taylor Swift - snap and pulse like a racing heartbeat, thumping away nostalgically as if we're lovingly looking back on a doe-eyed memory of falling in love. The chorus may not be Jepsen's biggest earworm, but it's effective in its delivery. The hushed delivery of 'I need to tell you something' in the pre-chorus reads like the sort of hushed secret children whisper behind hands, exploding into the rush of the chorus with 'I really like you' being an emphatic portrayal of a pre-adolescent time when such a mature construct as such as love was beyond comprehension, words even.
As in Hanks' Big, Carly Rae Jepsen isn't afraid to adopt the persona of the child in an adult's body. It's through this crouching down and looking at the world from a different angle that we truly begin to see the pure joy of meeting someone new, spending our nights watching television with them, and eventually growing to lo- I mean, really, really, really like them.

I definitely would really like to do Carly's single tomorrow and will probably make it.
But, has anyone suggested Rebel Heart at all? or Luke Bryan's EP?

Carly Rae Jepsen - I Really Like You

Chart success is fickle. Some pop artists struggle to get their hits, some are successful without much effort, some have a huge hit and fade into obscurity with that dreaded "one-hit wonder" tag doomed to be described with terms such as "underrated," "cult classic," "...just needed the right promo," and "hidden gem" for the end of time. The one-hit wonder status is a terrible fate for an artist and it's one that we see Carly Rae Jepsen actively trying to shake off with her current single "I Really Like You."
Carly's 2012 hit "Call Me Maybe" was a behemoth of a song. It smashed world wide and was acclaimed by everyone from soccer moms to indie blog writers who throw around the term "monoculture" whenever they find something mainstream they glob on to. "Call Me Maybe" was so big it somehow allowed Carly Rae bring Owl City near relevancy again with the follow-up collaboration and top 10 hit "Good Time." But "Call Me Maybe" was so monolithic that it just about eclipsed "Good Time" and the extremely underrated pop gem (see what I meant about the term underrated) true second single "This Kiss," secretly the best pop song of 2012.
All this back story is important because it helps to frame "I Really Like You." Wisely, Carly did not try and re-create a "Call Me Maybe" soundalike in hopes that that same chart magic would allow the song to catch on. She did however give "I Really Like You" that same youthful positivity, levity, and likability that surely helped "Call Me Maybe" catch on. "I Really Like You" is infectious and hard not to like, exploding with color and energy. That's not to say it's without its faults: the chorus of "I really x ∞ like you" could be stronger and it doesn't quite have the hooks and bounce of "Call Me Maybe's" strings and seems a bit too much at times like a funner rewrite of Taylor Swift's recent songs "Wonderland" or "New Romantics." This all may hold it back from smashing worldwide like it's predessor "Call Me Maybe;" but, those are minor criticisms that are easily forgotten when getting caught up in the enjoyable whirlwind of "I Really Like You."

Carly Rae Jepsen - "I Really Like You"
"I Really Like You" is a teen pop song that serves as the lead single to Jepsen's third album. Over a beat laid out by Peter Svensson (who recently worked on One Direction's "Rock Me" and Avril Lavigne's "Rock N Roll"), Carly lets her lover know that she "really really really really really really" likes him. Given Svensson's contribution, it's not a surprise that the track is led by a pounding drum beat. Whereas 2011's "Call Me Maybe" felt breezy and innocent, "I Really Like You" feels more insincere and calculated. Nonetheless, it's still a hugely enjoyable burst of synthpop that would feel right at home on Kiss.

This review period kinda felt rushed, so I'm extending Carly by a day to allow people to revise their current reviews or post theirs if they haven't yet. Drake's deadline remains 3/15.

"I Really Like You" Carly Rae Jepsen
They say you never forget your first love. And certainly, the swooping strings and coy delight of "Call Me Maybe" still set the heart aflutter like it's the viral video-infested summer of 2012. But with her latest single, Carly Rae Jepsen has crafted a worthy successor that can sit alongside "Maybe" on our playlists into eternity. "I Really Like You" is a pseudo-sequel to Jepsen's breakthrough hit; after her crush called her back, things went well, and now she's maybenearlyalmost ready to use the L-word. The thumping '80s drumbeat and booming chorus, just soft enough to hold you in its embrace, perfectly capture the tension of having those three words on the tip of your tongue—with all the youthful euphoria it may bring, as only Jepsen can do. The odds aren't looking too good at this point, but if 2015 does give us another a multi-month, era-defining #1 smash, ŕ la "Maybe," I really, really, really, really, really, really hope it's this one.
