I'm pretty sure it's been proven that while people sleep their brains are deciding what information is important to keep and what information can be disposed of. So I believe dreams are kind of random amalgamations of information made to entertain your conscious while your brain is in this process. That's why it's so hard to remember anything from your dreams, or at least it takes a lot more effort to do so. It's not new information, nor is it things made to be remembered.

I remember reading that it's impossible to dream of someone you've never seen before, so that means every single person that appears in your dream you've actually seen irl, even if you only walked past a person one time our brain will remember their face and randomly put them in one of your dreams later on and that's so interesting imo
