Here's the thing: as an artist you can chose what you want to write about.It's the world you create in a song. Sometimes you are just the observer and sing about it as it is and not how it should be. It's not the actual topic you are singing about that you should be judged for, but rather the execution. If you think the song sucks for the sake of being poorly written and produced, fine. But to come for the actual topic itself is a bit pityful.

Majority of critics don't slam Lana for her style, though. Not like how they dragged NYC to Hell and deeper for Sonic. But hey, what else is new? Elder act slamming a new generation prominent figure for some late, relevance-revival is the thing. See Madonna, Annie L., etc.

She doesn't have to blindly support anyone or anything. But don't be a bitch for the sake of press. Her wording has such an ugly extra dose of "oh this will get people talking" it's pathetic.

To me the difference lies in intent and what message the artist is trying to communicate with their work; in Down by the Water, Polly's not trying to advocate, promote, or "glorify" infanticide. If she were, people would be completely within their right to be outraged by and dismissive of it.

And I think that's where the difference lies for most people. People think Lana's glorifying self-destructive behavior under the guise of feminism. I'm not sure I agree that that's what she's doing, but then I'm hardly educated on this topic.

Lana doesn't need to write about **** that makes other people happy, that is seen as role model songwritting or that is feminist. She can do whatever she likes. Just because her name is out there doesn't mean she has to obey what is right. She is not regressing feminism, its not her fault people are stupid. Art isn't beautiful sometimes, and people should be able to write about the ugly side of things. Just like loving a man who abuses you, because you know, it's something that happens in real life.
