Asian actors are still stuck in the "Mammy Phase," imo. We're fine with seeing them as comic relief or even as nonhuman superheroes but the minute they portray the average Joe, we wonder why we couldn't have had a white person play that role. You have an excellent observation.

It's not problematic for Asians to play these roles until they get pigeonholed in to them. I was hoping the Hallyu Wave would birth a film sensation that would really kickstart a big Korean star but it seems to be highly unlikely

the original comment mentioning Avatar was in reference to The Last Airbender film, there is nothing racist or wrong with the James Cameron Avatar when white people are the bad guys in that movie, Zoe Saldana is the lead actress depicting a character of a foreign descent and the the ethnic characters in the film are purported as the good guys.
