I'm fairly positive she was actually singing. During rehearsal, the track was blank except for the chorus and spoken lines such as "sing it!" Through our in-ear radios, we could hear Katy breathe and sometimes come in just late enough to tell it was authentic.

She was the one that wanted those props and she actually paid for them as well! Not sure of the exact process of the specific designs and the choreography, but Katy did have a huge part in it.
After seeing the Super Bowl, I really am coming to realize that Katy's had a really great career. She's had 3 successful albums that all sold well and are at least Platinum-certified, all her singles have reached the top 40 and she's amassed upwards of 70M in digital sales in the US alone and two successful, sold-out tours. Also a great videography and, of course, now a Super Bowl performance. I have high hopes for her next album.
