This has nothing to do with the Year of Luigi flopping; it has more to do with Nintendo flopping in the time period. They didn't put out enough major AAA games and were scrambling to develop anything for the Wii U.

I never got the point of the #Yearof______. They barely put out any Luigi content. Super Mario Bros Wii U got the Super Luigi Bros DLC and Luigi's Mansion was released. They didn't even create an original game for him or anything.
