Actually the prices for the cassingles and CD singles were about $3.50 to $4, and this is why everyone has heard me argue ad nauseam about doubling the certifications for physical single sales. "Candle In The Wind 1997/Something About The Way You Look Tonight" sold 32 million copies worldwide. While the song's Soundscan total here in the US stands at 8.816 million, the single was sold at many non-Soundscan affiliated retailers who had never sold music before, and never did again. This explains the songs 11X Million Certification, and "Candle In The Wind 1997" winning the first diamond award ever for a single.
As for 1994, the top selling song of the year was "I'll Make Love To You" by Boys II Men, at 1.6 million copies (which happened to be the lowest total for any year tracked in the 1990s). Coming off having such a huge hit in 1992 with "End Of The Road," I feel fairly certain the Boys II Men song holds the weekly record for 1994. I also know the song was released during the second half of that year, but I am not sure how much it sold in its best week. I hope this helps some, as we might could pull up copies, not physical of course, of old Billboard magazines with the information, or try asking Paul Grein. Billboard's actual website did not begin operating until 1997.
