Haven't visit this thread in a long time.
Whoa, I left off in the top 100!
100-91: Can't Remember to Forget You is nice, Invisible is also nice, glad that you got into Reflektor it's really a masterpiece and a joyous listening experience. We latch onto Latch late and I like the song because it's more laid back and chill with weird stuff added. All About That Sass, can't stand Let it GO and don't f**k with Ed!
90-81: Break Free was alright, but thankfully I never got into it. Just a cheap EDM song and Ariana sings in a typical way to sound authentic. Centuries is good for all of it's worth. I Wanna Get Better is catchy, but it took some time to get into it. It's as fun as fun. Pills N Potions is good, but too bad no else care for this side of Nicki. Tennis Court is atmospheric good, but I didn't care for it when it was a US single. ***Flawless (Remix) is female empowerment done by the fierce and sassy duo ever. I still smell like Chocolate. I just want to break in......ok that's enough.
80-71: Do I Wanna Know? is one of alt. rock highlights in 2013. It's hard out here that Anaconda happen and hard! I couldn't get into Weekend. I like Black Widow mostly for Rita, but Iggy causes me to stay. Like this sound from TBK. Hideaway is such an undefined jam for me. I really love it.
70-61: Agora, 90s Music, Mother & Father are all nice. Sleeping With a Friend, Best Friend, Magic, and Forever are all good. Though, Magic is a grower. Yeah, I don't have a good set of vocabulary either even though I like to say a lot of things in my commentary.
60-51: Budapest is great and George's vocals are strong and powerful. Can't believe that he posses such voice. I like Automatic and I should've listen to it often. Hunger of the Pine. Sweater Weather made my top 10 from 2013 and it's a great song at the beach where the weather is so cold that you need a sweater. Amaloner's D is that high? Anyway, beautiful song by Sia and amazing dancing by Maddie in the video. Boom Clap is so annoying, Girls is a nice pop, XO is wonderful, All The Rage Back Home give me life a bit as I rock out to it in a weird kind of way.
50-41: I'm jamming to Summer right now and still gives me life. Rather Be is cool, but I'm not into it like everyone else. Goodness Gracious was fine, but I"m over it. I didn't mention this in my write-up, but I like the video for True Love and I guess the video was made because Chris was still feeling like what he was feeling in the song. Something In The Holy Water is wonderful and Carrie gets me to feel. My Song 5 was different than the rest in the album, but I liked it. The video was kinda of funny and the single itself is very good. Good production that reminds me of Timbaland and I like Ferg's part in the song. I still like Reflektor more than We Exist. But, We Exist is that haunting song that makes you want to move to the groovy music. The video is good and captures the moment of expressing oneself of the song.
40-31: Say You Love Me is a masterpiece that was like a grower, but I got more into on how often I hear it. Good write-up on it. I do enjoy psychedelic sounds and West Coast is strangely catchy. so Becky is famous for a curse in ATRL? Well, Showers tries to get me, but no, it didn't. You're Not the One, Gunshot, Smooth Sailing gets me pumped and it's not that smooth. 2 On is a good jam. Only Love Can Hurt Like This is a masterpiece and really glad I was able to listen to it a lot. Sam's soulful voice and sound is amazing. Stay With Sam! WHOA COME WITH NOW!-That's how epic that song is. All of that is needed to shout. Also the good 2011 songs are always sleeper hits for the next years. Even they don't like 2011.
30-21: Digital Witness is in a good amount of Best ofs, but this one is quite high. Dark Horse is my Prism single and it's the best song out of Prism too. Good to know that Bey and Jay like to share their sexy backseat sex ride. Poor driver don't get to see it. I need to listen to Two Weeks so I remember what it sounds like. Hey, look 2 On. No, it's Love Me Harder. Tho, 2 On should be in this spot, but whatever. Heard Feel in davidcg20's best of and I like it. I Blame Myself is another pop perfection song that should've also be on the radio. Good write-up on A Sky Full of Celebration.
20-11: Loved your layout where the background is moving from the song's video. Great effort on that. Sing is just wonderful and a fun song to get carry away with. Tho, there're people jokingly calling this JT. Coming of Age is good, I got to stay high all the time, Afraid is a mind f**K for sure and I liked it a lot in 2013 and into 2014. Of course, the majority of ATRL (um, majority of those who heard it) loves this video. Beggin for Thread is interesting. Wait, Shake it off is not #1?!! Does that mean Take Me To Church is going to get the #1? This is the ultimate forgiveness for never letting it be #1 on your chart and had to pretend it was. Or it will not be #1 because you hate me? Anyway, yeah, Haters gonna hate, hate, hate is meant to be fun, but it annoyed the crap of me and the sound hurts my ears. Timber disappointed me, but the harmonica is not bad. YFB is good. Drunk in Love- surfbort.
10-6: If I Could Change Your Mind get me going and let watch the trio dance. So hypnotized. G.U.Y. is one of my favorites from the album and like the video. Too bad it flopped that I forgot about it. Yup! That epic guitar solo in SOC! Good beats, but annoying chorus and wasn't feeling Iggy here. Sounds like she tried too hard and this song is not my style anyway. Oh, yeah Iggy gettin' heated! Lorde and her friendship song. Love it. I want to be in Lorde's team. Glad that Radioactive made the top 10 in 2013. It was my #1.
5-1: Here I go....Oh, is this Afterlife. I never heard the other one anyway. That hint was difficult also. I was waiting for its presence because of the other AF songs. Afterlife is another listening experience that I really enjoy. So good. Robbers is my fav 2014 single from them and surprise to see this high esp. in the top 5. Robbers is an easy song to love to listen to. Trumpets are the big thing in 2014. Wish it was Jason's song instead of Problem. Deep (House) Bass is also the big ass thing in 2014.I guess Iggy's 99 Problems reference was not bad. And.......Ain't it fun is #2! Thank god! That's a dumb excuse for them to not be #1. Imagine Dragons topple my main year-end countdown twice in a row. But still glad it's not #1. But it's a fun song that it is growing on me.
Gah, I know the #1 so the hint could stop, but what a tease. Cool to know your top 2 has church elements. Okay. That's ok, the song is criticize them anyway. Gee, I wonder what song that is. Hell, yeah Take Me to Life is #1! Take me to the #1! God, this song is so epic. The whole vibe I get is astounding. The extended metaphors, the structure of the song along with the church sound is remarkable. The ominous feeling, the moody dramatic, bone-chilling atmosphere, and the mindless chorus that gets me my life. Hozier's vocals are wonderful and connects well with the song to make it more powerful. The video adds a new perspective of the song. Damn. This song takes me away for sure. What an epic #1 and a great countdown. Your sins are taken away. Wait, it's still charting? Hmm. Nah, it's alright.
Albums: You listen to 40 albums and I only listen to 6. You got 5 of 6 here-Sam, Lana, Tinashe, Hozier, and Tove Lo. Just missing Linkin Park. I want to listen to Coldplay, George, Nicki, Jessie, Paloma, Ed, and M5. But your 2013: Love Sara's album. Hard to pick a fav since all I want to do is listen and enjoy. That's a true album. ARTPOP, Modern Vampires of the City, The 1975, The Bones Of What You Believe, Days Are Gone, and Reflektor all made my album countdown and they're all so good. Damn. What a listening experience. I also like Pure Heroine and Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die! Yeezus as an album was a mess (like most experimental albums), but taking them apart and most of the songs are not bad. Didn't like Ariana's album so her music does not do it for me and still need to hear Bey's out of nowhere self-titled album. I also like that T & S album and I listen to their other albums and they seem to change it up from time to time.
Tove made it to 28. I agree that the EP has some meaningless stuff like the ones you mention, but still good. Love those four best tracks. OH, I want to listen to FTP's album as well. Tinashe at 22. Tinashe did blow me away and the album is a wonderful listening experience. My favs are the title track, Bet, and Feels Like Vegas. The two singles are good, but pale in comparison with the others except for a few like that horrible Future song. Oh, I did an ATRL review on Tinashe, Tove Lo, and Hozier's album. I do like Dead Air from that Lorde -curated THG soundtrack. Work, Tough Love. I feel for Sam and his album is truly amazing and his emotional and soulful voice is quite powerful. Good rating on Hozier album and man, like the different types of music there. From Eden, Sedated and Angel of Small Death & The Codeine Scene are all of my favorites songs from the album. Oh, still on the top 5. Well, I don't think I saw Lana, but her album is good, but gets boring after a while. I just going to post this long ass comment that I love to do since the music here is really good.
What an epic Best of. You got the most views AND comments! Well deserved given the hard work you put into it. You have such great and impeccable taste in music and glad I paid attention to your chart in 2014. See ya.

Ghost Stories
Coldplay
2013: Pure Heroine - Lorde
2012: The Truth About Love - P!nk

Mylo Xyloto was a pretty polarising record, as they experimented with electronic sounds extensively with mixed results. Thankfully, they honed in on things and created this smooth, flawless, cohesive album. The album details a breakup as it descends into insanity (Ink), denial (True Love), heartbreak and crescendos with unconditional love (A Sky Full of Stars). It's quite an emotional journey that ends on a note that leaves you with a tear on your face as you smile. I don't get why this album is so hated, the only bad part is that if you pick the album apart, there are not many truly groundbreaking, career-defining songs, but the main point here is that they created this work of art that is poignant and stirring.
Best: Ink, True Love, A Sky Full of Stars

X
Ed Sheeran
2013: ARTPOP - Lady Gaga
2012: Night Visions - Imagine Dragons
adhdkjgfkgkadfklgfdgdfgyyyyyyfdgfdsgfdsd
Some may find Ed's debut album, +, boring because it mostly features just him and a guitar. This time round, he branches his sound out a bit more to include some R&B influences (only to invite Justin Timberlake comparisons). This has made his music more dynamic, making it a sonic pleasure too. But he doesn't overdo them, leaving his songs understated and rough gems that are waiting for you to uncover. Ed doesn't forget about his hip-hop influence too, as he spits some verses here (though none as good as You Need Me, I Don't Need You) (but it includes his worst song ever Take It Back).
Best: I'm a Mess, Sing, Don't, Photograph, Bloodstream, Tenerife Sea, Afire Love, Shirtsleeves

So Long, See You Tomorrow
Bombay Bicycle Club
2013: The Blessed Unrest - Sara Bareilles
2012: Warrior - Kesha Rose

After listening to Feel, I listened to this album out of curiosity. And now it's in the top 3 albums for 2014. This album is more experimental comapred to their usual indie rock/folk sound, such as that kitchen untensils breakdown rave in Overdone. But all in all, this album is pure joy. It's nostalgic, euphoric, emotional. It puts you in a really good mood and by the end of the album, you feel that tingly magical feeling, that kind of feeling you feel at the end of an amazing, chill-inducing album that really sets you in a whole different dimension.
Best: Overdone, It's Alright Now, Whenever, Wherever, Feel, So Long, See You Tomorrow

Ultraviolence
Lana Del Rey
2013: Heartthrob - Tegan and Sara
2012: Born to Die - Lana Del Rey
adhdkjgfkgkadfklgfdgdfgyyyyyyfdgfdsgfdsd
After the first listen, I thought I was disappointed. I was expecting Lana's signature trip-hop, orchestraic sound to dominate the album, but instead it sounded like one long gloomy song. I thought the songs sounded really similar and were too dark for me to get into. But I was so wrong. After a few listens, I truly discovered the real, dark, jarring beauty of every song. The best part of the whole album is the involvement of The Black Keys' lead vocalist, Dan Auerbach. Lana trades in the strings for guitars, creating this rough psychedelic vibe that toughens up her music even as she sings in her higher voice most of the time now. Lana bears her heart here, and it's raw yet simply magnificient.
Best: Shades of Cool, Brooklyn Baby, Sad Girl, Money Power Glory, ****ed My Way Up to the Top, Black Beauty
We're down to the #1 album!
What album is it?
If you don't know what it is
Then you've got a problem

1989
Taylor Swift
My ATRLcritic review - 9.7
2013: Paramore - Paramore
2012: Red - Taylor Swift
adhdkjgfkgkadfklgfdgdfgyyyyyyfdgfdsgfdsd
I was so prepared to not have a Taylor Swift album be my #1. I was so prepared to be disappointed after hearing Shake It Off. But hell no! The Lord overturned all our expectations and blew us away. Her country ballads will forever have a special place in my heart, but it's true that when she breaks free from the confines of country music, she is able to create sonically-appetising masterpieces. The production is more interesting, she's able to inject more personality into the music and the lyrics are still sharp and smart as ever.
She took influences from 80s music, yet somehow makes it sound very contemporary and modern. It doesn't exactly follow the modern trend of pop, instead she manages to carve out a new lane in pop for herself. Not only did she create one heck of a cohesive, joyous, pop experience, every song on the album can stand as it's own very well. Seriously, what album is filled with songs that really sound like an album together, yet all work as singles too?
Best: Blank Space, Style, Out of the Woods, Wildest Dreams, I Know Places, Clean, New Romantics, the whole album basically

I can't believe I hated on Ghost Stories when it first came out. That line about it being hated hit close to home
Mylo Xyloto is an amazing album and a personal favorite of mine. Anyone saying its not a masterpiece otherwise...
I have the BBC album and its incredible, I need to listen again soon. And I am a huge fan of Lana and her Ultraviolence. She can be ultraviolent to me anytime
That reveal though....
shocked!

Great description and yes at you using a performance from 1989's best song as your GIF choice. You better have Out Of The Woods at Number 1

X I found it significantly repetitive and a tad basic but it was still cute.
Ultraviolence Amazing. BTD is still better to me but it does its job as a great Lana release.
1989 There was definitely no doubt. Absolute masterpiece and the updated version of The Bible.

| #16 Welcome To New York
"it's a new soundtrack, i could dance to this beat, forevermore"
Well... Actually this isn't such a bad song, if you take out the basic lyrics, the cheesy synths, the lame chorus, the dated production, that "NEW YORK!" shouting, that robotic verses... yep. | | #15 Shake It Off
"it's like i got this music, in my mind, saying it's gonna be alright"
By this point, we can never truly judge her album's quality based on the lead single (same with Red + WANEGBT). While the lyrics are really basic, the production is top-notch, and this song is just a happy, carefree song and really shouldn't be taken as anything more. The trumpets/horns are simply the best, so catchy. | | #14 Bad Blood
"it's so sad to think about the good times, you and i"
So... we were all expecting a full on drag fest from Taylor aka Dear John and Better Than Revenge, but instead she kept things as impersonal as possible. Instead of a biting, scorching song, we get a song that merely talks about how someone did you wrong. But anyways, this song is still pretty irresistible, I'm somehow really hooked on it. The production is totally banging and the chorus, while a bit basic, is so anthemic and so catchy. | | #13 You Are In Love
"and you understand now when they lost their minds and fought the war, and why i spend my whole life trying to put it into words"
This song was touted to be a Secret Garden-influenced love ballad about Jack and Lena. While I still don't know what that is, this is one of the more 80s sounding songs on the album with it's warm and understated synths. The song is probably too quiet and slow for the album, hence why it's a bonus track. But looking past that, this is a well written third-person POV that really captures the incapturable nature of true love. Very recommended for weddings. | | #12 I Wish You Would
"you always knew how to push my buttons, you give me everything and nothing"
Yet another Jack Antonoff production, and again the most faithful production to the 80s, especially since this was inspired by the snare sounds from the Fine Young Cannibals. The way the verses are fast paced, and the tempo slows down in the chorus, is so fun./Bleachers. But Taylor injects a frantic energy that takes this song up a notch. And the part at the end where the production drowns out and "I-I-I, I-I-I wish I wish I" part repeats is simply sublime. | | #11 Wonderland
"you searched the world for something else, to make you feel like what we had"
This song used to be my favourite bonus track, but it was since dropped below the top 10 of the album. This song is still splendid though. It fuses her typical fairytale-ish sound and scope with some hard hitting electronic production. She's basically taking all that innocence she built up and tearing it into bits here. That bass drop >>> | | #10 This Love
"tossing, turning, struggle through the night with someone new"
The only collaboration with long time collaborator Nathan Chapman. Instead of going country in the song, the song is backed by deep drum beats and sparse electronic pulses. This is one of the lyrically better songs and just makes me appreciate the work Taylor and Nathan always achieves. | | #9 How You Get the Girl
"broke your heart i'll put it back together, i want you forever and ever"
I was so disappointed when I heard the Diet Coke snippet, it just sounded like 22 recreated, and it only featured her repeating a line in what I thought was the chorus. When I heard the song, my body just squirmed in epic joyness. That prechorus is just pure ecstasy. It's the most catchy thing ever and I just wanted to get up from my bed and dance forever. |

OMG OUR TASTE IS SOOOOOOOOO SIMILAR.
Our bottom 8 is basically the same except you had Wonderland instead of Stay.
The positions are roughly the same as well.
