honestly though, there is something about katy that appeals to tweens. the only time i liked her was middle school. me growing out of her music/schtick was partially because of age and partially because almost everything after the complete confection was trash.

i understand why she wants to hold onto the tween demographic, they're very marketable and reliable, but at the same time she just looks silly. her face being plastered all over the claire's at my local mall

taylor beats katy in sales/power because not only does she have the tween market locked down, but also super young girls, teenagers, college students, and grown adults. she has so many age groups fervently supporting her. there's a difference between liking a song on the radio (this is the case with almost every pop girl) and having fans that go to bat for you, purchase albums, buy merchandise, see you on tour, etc.


honest to god- who is rihanna's target audience? she gets airplay on virtually every format, her concerts have every demographic in attendance, her music doesn't really alienate anyone unless it's raunchy. i don't think she purposefully tailors to a certain group... maybe "young and urban" but i would never say that she mostly/only targets teenagers.
