Well the thing was that back in the 90's, the internet hadn't completely taken over yet, so people just bought whatever they were fed on television and pop culture magazines to determine popularity. It used to be that if the media was reporting upon someone a lot and shoving him or her down our throats, that must mean that this person is really popular and beloved.
Nowadays, you can't get away with pretending someone is a huge superstar when they're not. Now that the internet is around to spill every ounce of information about these people at the tips of our fingers, we can figure out how popular these people truly are, especially with trendy sites like Twitter. With the way that the media is still reporting on someone like Jennifer Lopez for instance, someone in 1999 would think that she's still as big as ever because they really didn't know any better.
