Let me rant in here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But I am smart enough to recognize that Beyonce is a different beast entirely. Cultural appropriation is one thing and although Beyonce is indeed a victim, she is also a victim of PURE racism, sexism, and HATE in the industry. She is very unique to the discussion as a whole.
She is a victim of cultural appropriation because we have SEEN people literally STEAL her **** and a blind eye is turned to it. I will never forget how Katy just STOLE the ****ing theme and EVERYTHING else from the O2 commercial. No credit given whatsoever. I mean, literally just took the whole ****ing theme from the camera angles to the attire and everything else. WOW. Black people can't have ****.
And then you can have Beyonce KILL the competition since 1996 and barely gets recognized but Lady Gaga was PRAISED as a genius, a cultural icon, the second coming, after her FIRST album. Never mind that her consistency waned shortly thereafter.
Another example is Adele. I actually like Adele and this is not shade towards her directly. But how was she put in the same ranks as Aretha, Beyonce, Whitney, Etta James, etc. after her FIRST album? I mean, she never had to prove herself. Yes, she has chops but the people she is being compared to and put in the same category as, have 15, 20, 30, 40+ YEARS of experience.
My professor talked about this one time when it came to Susan Boyle. He was a white, upper-class professor that was EXTRA stuffy but he couldn't understand how Susan Boyle, a contestant on a talent search show, could be put in the SAME ranks as Beyonce when Beyonce had put in LEGITIMATE hard work and TIME. He was a psychology professor and he said he understood that no one expected Susan Boyle to be able to sing so it created an "underdog" complex with viewers that had to make sure she succeeded because she "don't fit the description" of the people that usually sing. Never that she was any better than anyone else because she was a typical singer. Nothing outstanding and astonishing. But Beyonce is EXPECTED to be better so she is not given a fair break. She HAS to be exemplary. My professor just couldn't understand why the industry couldn't give Beyonce the same reception. He also was reluctant to acknowledge racism in the industry although I think that was his main objective.....
